Reid: Rhetoric vs.Reality

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

In the News

“It’s typical Washington double-speak for Harry Reid to warn Senate Republicans about ‘picking up the legislative pace’ on the same week that he is delaying official legislative business to accommodate a political fundraiser for one of his endangered Democrat incumbents.  Out-of-touch, partisan comments like these prove that Reid values the priorities of Washington over his Nevada constituents, and it is not surprising that Reid faces the lowest approval ratings of any Senator up for re-election next year.” -- Brian Walsh, NRSC Communications Director.

Reid threatens to cancel October break

The Hill

By Alexander Bolton

September 15, 2009

Congress has only been back in session for a week but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is already warning he may cancel the next break because a lack of GOP cooperation. Reid (D-Nev.) has warned Republicans that they need to pick up the legislative pace or he will cancel the weeklong Columbus Day recess next month. Reid told Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that the Senate will stay in session straight through October if Republicans slow the floor debate on appropriations bills and other issues.

Senate Will Wait While Obama Raises Money for Specter

Congressional Quarterly

By Greg Giroux

September 13, 2009

Coaxing Arlen Specter into switching parties and running for re-election as a Democrat was a major coup for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who is bending the Senate's schedule to accommodate a presidential fundraiser for Specter Tuesday afternoon in Pennsylvania.  Reid announced Friday that the Senate would hold no votes after 3 p.m. Tuesday. His office later said that the scheduling decision was meant to accommodate a long-planned fundraiser that President Obama is headlining in Philadelphia to benefit Specter's campaign.
