U.S. Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) embraced his support for the job-killing card check bill when he voted for President Barack Obama’s controversial nominee, Craig Becker, for Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) today.
By voting for Becker, Governor Ritter’s appointed U.S. Senator endorsed a fervent supporter of card check who has publicly suggested that the “NLRB can implement card check through regulations without changing Congress.”
“Actions speak louder than words, and Senator Bennet’s vote for President Obama’s divisive nominee speaks volumes about his support for the job-killing card check legislation,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokeswoman Amber Wilkerson Marchand. “Despite his previous ducking and waffling, Governor Ritter’s appointed U.S. Senator backed the card check bill when he voted for Craig Becker’s appointment, and there’s no doubt that Coloradans will hold Bennet accountable if he reaches the General Election in November.”
Several of Bennet’s Democrat colleagues helped defeat Becker’s nomination today in a 52-33 vote, including U.S. Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE), who said “the nominee’s statements fly in the face of Nebraska’s Right to Work laws, which have been credited in part with our excellent business climate that has attracted employers and many good jobs to Nebraska.”
Becker’s nomination comes as the Obama Administration has suggested that they will push card check through the Administration instead of through Congress. Special Assistant to the President at the AFL-CIO Stewart Acuff wrote for the Huffington Post last week:
“Most importantly, we are very close to getting the support necessary to pass the Employee Free Choice Act which would simplify and streamline organizing, effectively punish employers who violate workers rights with $20,000 civil fines and triple damage back pay for firing workers, and force the Financial Elite to bargain in good faith with unions by allowing unions to seek arbitration for recalcitrant employers.”
