As Robin Carnahan Supports Obama’s Stimulus, Her Brother Seeks To Benefit

As the President’s $787 billion stimulus continues to create problems for the Democrats who supported this massive debacle, Democrat Senate candidate Robin Carnahan’s (D-MO) brother – Tom Carnahan – applied for $90 million in stimulus money for his wind farm company.

But according to several reports, Tom admitted that these wind turbines are made by a company based in India – not Missouri.

In light of the recent reports that stimulus jobs are being shipped overseas, this will be another problematic issue for Tom’s sister, Robin, who supported President Obama’s failed stimulus debacle, which has not created much-needed jobs in Missouri.

National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Press Secretary Amber Marchand issued the following statement in response to these developments:

“It looks like the stimulus that Robin Carnahan supported may benefit her brother Tom, but it will not necessarily benefit the people of Missouri. Considering the disturbing reports that stimulus jobs are being shipped overseas, will Robin show some leadership and revoke her support for this debacle? Or will she continue to rubberstamp the Obama administration’s out-of-control spending agenda, which has not created much needed jobs in Missouri during our nation’s economic crisis?

“This election is a leadership test for Robin Carnahan, and the longer she remains silent, the more deafening that silence will become for voters who are looking for real leaders who will restore the checks-and-balances that they deserve in Washington.”

Background Information:

Carnahan Supported Obama’s Massive “Stimulus” Bill:

Carnahan Expressed Her Support Of The Economic Stimulus Bill. “Democratic Secretary of State Robin Carnahan indicated her support for the federal economic stimulus package Saturday while Democrats rallied behind her as their U.S. Senate candidate for 2010.” (David A. Lieb, “Carnahan Expresses Support For Stimulus Law,” The Associated Press, 3/7/09)

Carnahan Said “Doing Nothing” Was Not An Option. “‘For the folks who say doing nothing was an option, I disagree with that,’ Carnahan said in an interview.” (David A. Lieb, “Carnahan Expresses Support For Stimulus Law,” The Associated Press, 3/7/09)

Q: “Did Your Family Name Help [Start Wind Capital Group]?” TOM CARNAHAN: “I Think It Did. I Don’t Think They Did It Because Of My Family Name, But They Knew Where To Find Me.” (Repps Hudson, “Carnahan: Gone With The Wind,” St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 11/7/08)

Carnahan’s Turbines Were Made In India. REPPS HUDSON: “Where are the turbines made?” CARNAHAN: “We have Suzlon (Wind Energy) turbines. They build the turbines in India . . . .” (Repps Hudson, “Carnahan: Gone With The Wind,” St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 11/7/08)

MONICA TRAUZZI: “China has really begun taking the reins on renewable energy development. The turbines that you guys use, in fact, come from India. So how does the U.S. sort of stay competitive in this global renewable energy market and have we already fallen behind some of these countries who are taking the lead?” TOM CARNAHAN: “Furs, just to make a clarification, we did some early projects with Suzlon, which is an Indian-based manufacturer, who is actually manufacturing in Minnesota right now, but our original projects had turbines that largely came from India.” (“Renewables: Wind Capital Group’s Carnahan Discusses Expansion Of Wind Power In U.S.,” E & E News, 10/29/09)

Wind Capital Group Is Working On A $300 Million Wind Farm Development, Which Includes Applying For $90 Million In Stimulus Dollars. “Wind Capital Group, led by President Tom Carnahan, said Monday it has closed on financing for Missouri’s largest wind energy development. The lenders, led by Nord/LB, Bayern LB, Rabobank, Santander and Union Bank, are providing $240 million in debt facilities to support the construction and operation of the proposed Lost Creek Wind Project in DeKalb County, Mo. The debt facilities consist of a construction loan, term loan and letter of credit. The project also is seeking $90 million in aid through the federal stimulus package.” (Kelsey Volkmann, “Wind capital Gets Financing For Mo.’s Largest Wind Farm,” St. Louis Business Journal, 10/29/09)

According To The Cost Of The Project And Projection Of Jobs To Be Created, It Would Cost Close To $120,000 Per Job. “The project, which is expected to cost more than $300 million and create more than 2,500 jobs, is believed to be the largest investment by the private sector in the state of Missouri this year, Wind Capital said.” (Kelsey Volkmann, “Wind capital Gets Financing For Mo.’s Largest Wind Farm,” St. Louis Business Journal, 10/29/09)

When Vice President Biden Was In Missouri, He Visited With Tom Carnahan On His Wind Farm, Noting That The Stimulus Helped Move His Company Forward. “Vice President Joe Biden told a crowd at a mid-Missouri factory Thursday what Tom Carnahan hesitated to admit to himself about a Northwest Missouri wind energy project. A $300 million, 100-turbine wind farm slated for DeKalb County ‘was on hold’ until recently, Mr. Biden said. Banks and investors were turning away the Wind Capital Group, which has been eyeing a location six miles south of King City for its next farm, because of economic conditions.” (Alyson E. Raletz, “Biden: Stimulus Spurred Wind Farm,” St. Joseph News-Press, 4/17/09)

Carnahan Agreed With Biden, Saying “The Stimulus Changed Everything.” “‘We never really liked to say it out loud,” said Mr. Carnahan, president/founder of Wind Capital Group, which already owns wind farms in Gentry, Atchison and Nodaway counties. ‘A few months ago, the banks were closed. Banks now have confidence to move forward … The stimulus changed everything.’” (Alyson E. Raletz, “Biden: Stimulus Spurred Wind Farm,” St. Joseph News-Press, 4/17/09)
