La Crosse County Democrat chairwoman Vicki Burke recently admitted to the Wall Street Journal that “in talking to people who work in [Mr. Feingold's] campaign, they think, given the atmosphere, that this could be the first time where he could possibly lose a race.” But, as the Lacrosse Tribune’s Samantha Marcus reports today, Burke now claims her comments were “taken out of context.”
The Democrats’ county chairwoman was right the first time: Recent polls by Rasmussen and Democrat firm PPP show Senator Feingold in a dead heat with Republican Ron Johnson. Notably, Feingold earns under 50 percent support in all recent polling. Meanwhile, look no further than Russ Feingold’s desperate and misleading attack ads for evidence that the 18-year incumbent and his handlers are in a panic about their struggling reelection bid. As respected political analyst Stu Rothenberg writes in Roll Call today, the Senate race in Wisconsin is now among the most competitive in the nation.
“As Senator Feingold continues to rubberstamp a partisan job-killing agenda in Washington, even his Democrat handlers have to admit that voters have soured on the 18-year incumbent. Clearly, Feingold’s out-of-control economic schemes have failed to deliver the jobs he promised, while recklessly driving our national debt past $13 trillion,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Chris Bond. “As Wisconsinites work hard to create opportunities for their children and grandchildren, the state’s families, seniors and job-creators deserve better than what Russ Feingold has given them. There’s no doubt that voters will hold Russ Feingold accountable when they elect a fiscally responsible Republican this November.”
