In Connecticut, the Cook Political Report moved the Senate race rating to “Toss Up” on the same day that President Obama was desperately attempted to rescue perpetual liar Dick Blumenthal’s campaign. Jennifer Duffy writes:
The contest between Democratic Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon has been gradually closing over the past few months, and is now in single digits, according to some polls. A Quinnipiac University poll (September 8-12 of 875 likely voters) gave Blumenthal a six-point lead over McMahon, 51 percent to 45 percent. They were statistically tied among independents, with Blumenthal taking 47 percent to 46 percent for McMahon, and among men where McMahon had a one-point advantage, 48 percent to 47 percent… the Quinnipiac poll, coupled with the Pollster.com trend line and the Republican numbers we’ve seen, suggest a competitive race that is now up for grabs. As such, the race moves to the Toss Up column.
While the New York Times reports:
Richard Blumenthal, the state’s attorney general and a fixture of politics in the Constitution State for close to 40 years, was supposed to be invulnerable as he seeks to replace retiring Senator Chris Dodd. Polling at the beginning of the year put his lead at more than 40 points. But public polling now suggests that Mr. Blumenthal’s opponent, former wrestling executive Linda McMahon, has driven that lead down significantly by spending tens of millions of dollars. One survey has him ahead by only six points. And the Cook Political Report, which tracks congressional races, on Thursday reconsidered its rating as “leans Democrat” and moved the contest into the “tossup” category… “A race which was once thought to be untouchable for Republicans is very clearly in play,” said Brian Walsh, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. “National Democrats are going to have to spend a lot of money defending one of the bluest states in the nation.”
