Two Years Later, Sherrod Brown’s $787 Billion Stimulus Has Failed To Create Promised Jobs

Two years after President Barack Obama signed the Democrats’ $787 billion stimulus debacle into law, voters are reminded that liberal U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) has failed to create the jobs he promised.

The Obama White House projected that their massive stimulus spending would cap national unemployment at 8 percent, and Brown promised Ohioans that it would “go a long way toward putting Americans back to work and our economy back on track,” even claiming last September that the stimulus has worked. But since Brown and the Democrats rammed the bill into law on a party-line vote, Ohio’s unemployment rate has risen to 9.6 percent, above the national average.

Despite the fact that his failed stimulus has helped drive our national debt over $14 trillion, Brown refuses to change his support for reckless spending. The new Obama budget proposal that Brown has praised would add an additional $7.2 trillion to the debt over the next ten years.

“In the two years since Sherrod Brown rubberstamped President Obama’s $787 billion stimulus and promised it would create jobs, Ohio’s unemployment rate has risen even higher,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Chris Bond. “But not only does Brown refuse to admit the failure of his massive stimulus spending, he continues to demand even more reckless spending with his support for the Obama budget that would add an additional $7.2 trillion to our debt over ten years. Whether it’s his broken promises on jobs or his refusal to take our spending and debt crisis seriously, Senator Brown is clearly failing to represent the best interests of Ohio.”

Meanwhile, the NRSC launched a new web video today entitled “Happy Anniversary, Stimulus,” to remind voters nationwide of the failure of the Democrats’ $787 billion stimulus debacle.

Background Information

Brown Said The Stimulus Would “Go A Long Way Toward Putting Americans Back To Work,” And Said It Would Provide “Immediate Job Creation.” “‘This bill will go a long way toward putting Americans back to work and our economy back on track,’ Mr. Brown said. ‘It includes critical infrastructure funds that provide immediate job creation while driving long-term economic development. It also creates a new generation of green jobs that will revive our nation’s manufacturing base while reducing our dependence on foreign oil.’” (Tom Troy, “Brown, Kaptur Back Stimulus; GOP’s Voinovich Rejects It,” The [Toledo, OH] Blade, 2/12/09)

In September 2010, Brown Said The Stimulus Has Worked. “U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat from Avon who was in Wooster Wednesday for a dairy roundtable, said the stimulus has worked. Much has been accomplished, like home weatherization for seniors and low-income families, and infrastructure improvements, like water, sewer, highway and bridge projects, he said.” (Bobby Warren, “Business Leaders: Recovery Will Be Long And Slow,” Daily Record [Wooster, OH], 9/6/10)

“‘When I Hear People Say The Stimulus Had No Impact, They’re Just Dead Wrong,’ Brown Said. ‘We Were Losing 700,000 Jobs A Month In This Country Before The Stimulus Package, Now We Are Gaining Jobs. That’s The Answer To Me.’” (Bobby Warren, “Business Leaders: Recovery Will Be Long And Slow,” Daily Record [Wooster, OH], 9/6/10)
