In an effort to keep the federal government open and ensure full funding for America’s military men and women, the U.S. House of Representatives is preparing to pass a one-week continuing resolution today that will also preserve full funding for our troops through September 2011.

But unfortunately, liberal U.S. Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) took to the Senate floor today to blast the troop funding bill, calling it a “non-starter,” and once again threatened a government shutdown.

Notably, while Senate Democrat leaders play politics with the troop funding plan, U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) expressed his full support for the measure on the Senate floor today, saying:

This bill does everything Democrats have previously said they want. It cuts Washington spending by an amount that Democrat leaders believe is reasonable. The policy prescriptions it contains have been previously agreed to by Democrat leaders and signed by the President. And, most importantly, this is the only proposal out there that keeps the government open. In other words, if a shutdown does occur, our Democrat friends have no one to blame but themselves — because they have done nothing whatsoever to prevent it. Since they have produced no alternative to the bill that the House is sending over today, this is the only proposal currently on the table that will keep the government open.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) today called on U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) to tell voters whether he will – once again – stand with his liberal Washington party bosses and oppose this crucial funding for our troops.

“Senator Casey’s constituents in Pennsylvania deserve to know – will he once again stand with the liberal wing of his party, or will he support this effort to keep the government open and fund our men and women in uniform?” said NRSC spokesman Chris Bond today.
