As Republicans Seek A Balanced Budget Amendment, Amy Klobuchar Demand New Tax Hikes, Wasteful Spending

Walks In Lockstep With D.C. Party Bosses, Against Minnesotans’ Interests

It’s been more than 790 days since liberal U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and her fellow Senate Democrats passed a federal budget – during which time our national debt has exploded to a record-high $14.3 trillion.

But as Senate Republicans today propose – and unanimously support – a common-sense Balanced Budget Amendment to finally bring Washington’s spending and debt under control, Klobuchar is standing instead with Al Franken and her D.C. party bosses in calling for new job-killing tax hikes and yet another round of wasteful “stimulus” spending.

Notably, as a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2006 Klobuchar criticized Washington’s spending habits and even supported a balanced budget. But since arriving in the Senate, Klobuchar has broken her promise to Minnesotans, joining her liberal Democrat colleagues as they continue to abdicate their basic responsibility to pass a federal budget.

“In 2006, Amy Klobuchar said Washington needed some good Minnesota common sense to reduce our country’s debt, but it was just empty campaign rhetoric,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox.  “The fact is since Amy Klobuchar became a member of the Senate our national debt has risen from $8.7 trillion to $14.3 trillion and neither Klobuchar nor her sidekick Al Franken have even bothered to offer a proposal to balance our budget.”

Background Information:

AS A CANDIDATE FOR THE SENATE IN 2006, AMY KLOBUCHAR EXPRESSED SUPPORT FOR A BALANCED BUDGET

AMY KLOBUCHAR: “Just think back to the Clinton administration, 1995 balanced the budget. By the year 2000, the plan was to put $200 billion, sock it away for Social Security. We had 15 years on what we have now. Social Security was saved for 15 additional years, now it’s been moved back. If we can get that balanced budget in place and we can move on this, we’re going to be able to secure Social Security for the future. I believe Social Security is the fundamental way that we can protect people in this country.” (NBC’s, “Meet The Press,” 10/15/06)

AMY KLOBUCHAR: “I think Washington needs some good Minnesota common sense. Washington pushed the national debt to $9 trillion dollars. They’ve spent billions on giveaways to special interests. … We need to send people to Washington who are really going to change things and shake things up.” (Klobuchar Campaign Ad, “Washington,” Accessed 6/29/11)

AMERICANS SUPPORT A BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT

“…there is overwhelming support for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution requiring a balanced budget… Interest in enacting a balanced budget amendment clearly has spiked due to the unprecedented increase of budget deficits in excess of $1.6 trillion.” (“Poll: Vast Majority of Americans Favor Balanced Budget Amendment,” Yahoo News, 5/27/11)

“As the intense debate over the federal budget continues to dramatically unfold in Washington, a new Sachs/Mason-Dixon poll finds an overwhelming number of Americans would support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution requiring Congress to pass a balanced budget every year.” (“Sachs/Mason-Dixon Poll Finds Strong National Suppor For A Balanced Budget Amendment,” Sachs/Mason-Dixon Poll, 5/27/11)
