As Republicans Seek A Balanced Budget Amendment, Brown & Obama Demand New Tax Hikes, Wasteful Spending

Walks In Lockstep With Obama, D.C. Party Bosses, Against Ohioans’ Interests

It’s been more than 790 days since liberal U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and his fellow Senate Democrats passed a federal budget – during which time our national debt has exploded to a record-high $14.3 trillion.

But as Senate Republicans today propose – and unanimously support – a common-sense Balanced Budget Amendment to finally bring Washington’s spending and debt under control, Brown is standing instead with President Barack Obama and the rest of his Washington party bosses, joining their calls for new job-killing tax hikes and yet another round of wasteful “stimulus” spending.

Notably, as a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2006 Brown bragged about supporting a balanced budget amendment. But since arriving in the Senate, Brown has broken his promise to Ohioans, joining his liberal Democrat colleagues as they continue to abdicate their basic responsibility to pass a federal budget.

“In 2006, Sherrod Brown told Ohioans that he stood up to his own party and supported a balanced budget amendment, but it was just empty campaign rhetoric,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox.  “The fact is since Sherrod Brown became a member of the Senate our national debt has risen from $8.7 trillion to $14.3 trillion and he hasn’t even bothered to offer a proposal to balance our budget.”

SHERROD BROWN: “I Stood Up To A President Of My Own Party . . .  In Support Of The Balance Budget Amendment, In Restoring Fiscal Sanity To Our Government. I agree with Senator Voinovich that Mike DeWine and others have betrayed conservative principles of limited government. I want to go to the Senate and work with Senator Voinovich on sound tax policy that benefits the middle class, without burying our grandchildren in debt.” (Ohio Senate Debate, City Club Of Cleveland, http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/OhioSenateDebate, 10/27/06)

AMERICANS SUPPORT A BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT

“…there is overwhelming support for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution requiring a balanced budget… Interest in enacting a balanced budget amendment clearly has spiked due to the unprecedented increase of budget deficits in excess of $1.6 trillion.” (“Poll: Vast Majority of Americans Favor Balanced Budget Amendment,” Yahoo News, 5/27/11)

“As the intense debate over the federal budget continues to dramatically unfold in Washington, a new Sachs/Mason-Dixon poll finds an overwhelming number of Americans would support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution requiring Congress to pass a balanced budget every year.” (“Sachs/Mason-Dixon Poll Finds Strong National Suppor For A Balanced Budget Amendment,” Sachs/Mason-Dixon Poll, 5/27/11)
