As Republicans Seek A Balanced Budget Amendment, Menendez Demands New Tax Hikes, Wasteful Spending

Wants To Slam New Jersey Families With More Job-Killing Tax Hikes

It’s been more than 790 days since liberal U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and his fellow Senate Democrats passed a federal budget – during which time our national debt has exploded to a record-high $14.3 trillion.

But as Senate Republicans today propose – and unanimously support – a common-sense Balanced Budget Amendment to finally bring Washington’s spending and debt under control, Menendez is instead calling for new job-killing tax hikes and yet another round of wasteful “stimulus” spending on the backs of New Jersey’s middle class.

Notably, as a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2006 Menendez routinely presented himself as a proponent of fiscal responsibility.  But since arriving in the Senate, Menendez has done the exact opposite – running up the taxpayer credit card and joining his Democrat colleagues as they continue to abdicate their basic responsibility to pass a federal budget.

“As a candidate in 2006, Bob Menendez promised voters he would fight for fiscal responsibility in Washington, but instead it’s been more than 790 days since he and his Democrat colleagues passed any budget at all,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Chris Bond.  “Now Menendez is demanding more job-killing tax hikes and standing in the way of this common-sense proposal to finally balance our budget.”

Notably, Menendez is the only sitting U.S. Senator currently under federal investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Background Information:

AS A CANDIDATE FOR THE SENATE IN 2006, MENENDEZ REPEATEDLY PRESENTED HIMSELF AS A FISCAL HAWK:

MENENDEZ: “And Lastly The Enormous Debt That The President Is Generating By Virtue Of His Fiscal Policy Is The Debt That Their Children And Grandchildren Will Pay. I Think That That’s Immoral.” (ABC’s, “This Week,” 9/24/06)

MENENDEZ: “What’s Irresponsible Is The Republican Attitude Of The Credit Card Mentality They Have For The Future.” (Herb Jackson, “Tax Policy Sharply Divides Menendez And Kean,” The [Bergen County, NJ] Record, 10/13/06)

IN THE MORE THAN 790 DAYS SINCE THE DEMOCRAT-CONTROLLED SENATE PASSED A BUDGET, THE NATIONAL DEBT HAS RISEN BY AN ADDITIONAL $3.1 TRILLION:

  • On April 27, 2009, The National Debt Was $11.2 Trillion. (Treasury Direct Website, www.treasurydirect.gov, Accessed 6/7/11)

  • Today, The National Debt Is Over $14.3 Trillion. (Treasury Direct Website, www.treasurydirect.gov, Accessed 6/2811)

‘VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS FAVOR BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT’

“…there is overwhelming support for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution requiring a balanced budget… Interest in enacting a balanced budget amendment clearly has spiked due to the unprecedented increase of budget deficits in excess of $1.6 trillion.” (“Poll: Vast Majority of Americans Favor Balanced Budget Amendment,” Yahoo News, 5/27/11)

“As the intense debate over the federal budget continues to dramatically unfold in Washington, a new Sachs/Mason-Dixon poll finds an overwhelming number of Americans would support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution requiring Congress to pass a balanced budget every year.” (“Sachs/Mason-Dixon Poll Finds Strong National Suppor For A Balanced Budget Amendment,” Sachs/Mason-Dixon Poll, 5/27/11)
