After Campaigning On Support For A Balanced Budget, Sherrod Brown Votes Against Even Debating Balanced Budget Amendment

As a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2006, Democrat Sherrod Brown (D-OH) routinely preached the importance of “fiscal sanity,” and promised Ohioans he would support efforts to balance the federal budget.

But today, Brown voted with his Washington party bosses against even considering a measure to balance the federal budget while cutting runaway spending now and capping Washington’s spending in the future – just the latest in a long pattern of Brown putting his liberal Washington agenda ahead of keeping his promises to Ohioans.

“Sadly, it’s not surprising that Senator Brown would vote against even considering a balanced federal budget today.  But Ohioans are no doubt wondering how Brown explains his vote today in light of his repeated claims to support a balanced budget in Washington.” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox today.

In Washington, Brown has routinely abandoned his previous support for fiscal responsibility, instead choosing to rubberstamp President Barack Obama’s reckless spending agenda – including the failed $787 billion stimulus and $2 trillion health care overhaul.

In fact, it’s been 814 days since Sherrod Brown and his fellow Senate Democrats have proposed any federal budget, much less the balanced budget Brown promised to support.

SHERROD BROWN: “I Stood Up To A President Of My Own Party . . .  In Support Of The Balance Budget Amendment, In Restoring Fiscal Sanity To Our Government. I agree with Senator Voinovich that Mike DeWine and others have betrayed conservative principles of limited government. I want to go to the Senate and work with Senator Voinovich on sound tax policy that benefits the middle class, without burying our grandchildren in debt.” (Ohio Senate Debate, City Club Of Cleveland, http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/OhioSenateDebate, 10/27/06)
