Casey & Dems Threaten To Stiff Seniors & Military Unless They Get Their Job-Killing Tax Hikes

Shameful Threats Underscore Broken Promises, Reckless Deficit Spending

As a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2006, Democrat Bob Casey promised Pennsylvanians that he “believe[d] in a balanced budget” because “government should live within its means, like any small business.”  Instead, it’s been 806 days since Casey and his fellow Senate Democrats passed any federal budget, much less a balanced budget – during which time our national debt has ballooned to a record-high $14.3 trillion.  Meanwhile, the U.S. Treasury now reports that our federal government’s deficit is on track to top $1 trillion this fiscal year.

But rather than take responsibility for his broken promises and failure to perform this basic job function, Casey and his Washington party bosses are now threatening to withhold payments from Social Security recipients and members of our armed forces, unless Republicans agree to their demands for job-killing tax hikes.

As the Associated Press reports:

Echoing President Barack Obama’s warning, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says Social Security payments would stop if there is no deal to raise the government’s borrowing limit by Aug. 2.  Speaking on the Senate floor, the Nevada Democrat said flatly that payments for veterans benefits and the military, as well as Social Security, would cease if the government defaults on its obligations. His statement goes beyond Obama, who said earlier this week that he could not guarantee Social Security checks will be issued on Aug. 3.

As National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Chairman Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) noted yesterday, “the decision to stop sending Social Security checks, or other benefits lies solely with the Obama Administration” because billions of dollars will continue to flow into the government’s coffers every day, a fact acknowledged by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner.

“Bob Casey is the one who rubberstamped President Obama’s failed stimulus debacle and $2 trillion health care overhaul, driving our national debt past its $14.3 trillion limit, so it’s outrageous that he and his party bosses would threaten to stop payments to Pennsylvania seniors and members of our armed forces unless Republicans agree to President Obama’s job-killing tax hikes,” said NRSC spokesman Chris Bond today.  “Once again, Casey is playing politics in Washington at the expense of Pennsylvania families.”

Background Information:

AS A CANDIDATE IN 2006, BOB CASEY EXPRESSED SUPPORT FOR A BALANCED FEDERAL BUDGET:

Casey Campaign Ad: “I Believe In A Balanced Budget. Government Should Live Within Its Means, Like Any Small Business.” MR. RUSSERT: “Let me find out how you would implement something that you’re promising the voters of Pennsylvania. Here’s a Casey campaign ad about our budget.” (Videotape, Bob Casey campaign ad): MR. CASEY: “I believe in a balanced budget. Government should live within its means, like any small business.” MR. RUSSERT: “How would you get a balanced budget?” MR. CASEY: “It’s not easy, Tim, but here are the steps we should take. First of all, when it comes to the budget, what’s missing principally is a lack of fiscal responsibility, you know that. We’ve gone from about two, 236 of, of surplus down to 296 in deficit. We need some fiscal discipline.” (2006 Pennsylvania Senate Debate, “Meet The Press,” 9/3/06)

In 2006, Casey Attacked His Opponent For Voting To Raise The Debt Ceiling. MR. CASEY: “I’m for, I’m for fiscal responsibility. Hey, Rick, you’re–there’s only one guy sitting at this table running for the Senate who voted for those record deficits and voted to raise the debt number more in, in a couple of years than every president from George Washington to, to Bill Clinton. You’ve got a lot of explaining to do. I’m, I’m the one who’s been fiscally responsible in my work. You ought to try it.” (2006 Pennsylvania Senate Debate, “Meet The Press,” 9/3/06)

Casey: “We Have To Take A Different Course. I Really Believe That We’ve Got To Move This Country In A Brand New Direction. We Cannot Stay On This Road Of Deficit And Debt And Division.” (Pennsylvania Senate Debate, www.c-spanvideo.org, 10/12/06)
