Secretary Of State Husted Announced The Healthcare Freedom Amendment Will Be On The Ballot In 2012
Earlier today, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted announced that he has certified nearly 427,000 signatures – only 385,245 were needed – for a Constitutional Amendment that would protect Ohioans from the job-killing healthcare mandates from Sherrod Brown’s government-run healthcare bill.
As the Columbus Dispatch reports:
“A proposal to abolish a key portion of the federal health-care law in Ohio has enough signatures to qualify for the Nov. 8 ballot, the secretary of state’s office says. Secretary of State Jon Husted today certified 426,998 signatures for the constitutional amendment, which only required 385,245 valid signatures of registered Ohio voters, or 10 percent of the total vote cast for governor in 2010.” (Darrel Rowland, Proposal to abolish part of federal health-care law has enough signatures for Ohio ballot, Columbus Dispatch, 07/26/11)
“In increasing numbers, the people of Ohio are sending a clear message to Sherrod Brown and his liberal friends in Washington that they oppose his job-killing government healthcare bill,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee Spokesman (NRSC) Jahan Wilcox. “With over 516,000 unemployed Ohioans, Brown should focus on passing pro-growth policies that will create jobs for Ohio, instead of rubber-stamping President Obama’s big government agenda that is killing jobs in the Buckeye State.”
Background
- In order to put Healthcare Freedom Amendment on the 2012 ballot, petitioners needed to collect five percent of the total votes cast in 44 of Ohio’s 88 counties, in the most recent gubernatorial election.
