Berkley Set To Explain Why She Supported The Stimulus & ObamaCare
After spending a few days in New York City to raise money from her trial lawyer friends, Las Vegas Congresswoman Shelley Berkley has decided to bring her self-described “jobs tour” – which has actually been centered more on attacking Senator Dean Heller than promoting pro-jobs policies – to Reno.
During this tour, Berkley will be able to tell Northern Nevadans that not only did she follow her liberal leader Harry Reid in supporting ObamaCare and the failed $787 billion stimulus, but her congressional district is also home to one of the highest unemployment and foreclosure rates in the country.
“If Northern Nevadans take a quick look at Shelley Berkley’s record they will quickly find out that she’s no different than her liberal mentor Harry Reid. Not only did Berkley follow Reid in rubberstamping the failed $787 billion stimulus – which was supposed to ‘create or save’ 34,000 Nevada jobs – into law, they also supported Barack Obama’s job-killing, government-run healthcare bill,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox.
Background
Shelley Berkley’s “Jobs” Tour Is Focused On Attacking Her Opponent
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL: “U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley on Tuesday launched a “focus on jobs” tour across Nevada by lobbing critical bombs at U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, her opponent in the 2012 Senate race.” (Laura Myers, Berkley begins voyage for jobs, Las Vegas Review-Journal, 08/17/11)
ASSOCIATED PRESS: “Berkley’s supporters Tuesday lapped up her every comment, responding to each dig on Heller with passionate cheers.” (Cristina Silva, Shelley Berkley zeroes in on Medicare, jobs in Nevada Senate race, Associated Press, 08/17/11)
Berkley Wants Nevadans To Forget That Her Jobs Plan Was A $787 Billion Stimulus That Was Supposed To ‘Create Or Save’ 34,000 Nevada Jobs
SHELLEY BERKLEY: “From incentives to increase clean energy production to funding for work on I-15 and the Las Vegas Beltway, this [stimulus] package will mean jobs for Nevada at a time when we continue to face record unemployment levels,” said Berkley. “According to the White House, passage of this legislation will create or save 34,000 jobs statewide, with the majority of those in Clark County.” (Shelley Berkley, Berkley: Report Shows Broad Economic Recovery Package Will Mean More Nevada Jobs, Press Release, 02/12/09)
But Since Berkley’s Stimulus Was Signed Into Law Nevada Has Lost Nearly 70,000 Jobs And The State Has Become The Unemployment Capital Of The Country
BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS: As Of July 2011, Nevada Has Lost Over 68,724 Jobs Since The Stimulus Passed In February 2009. (Bureau Of Labor Statistics Website, www.data.bls.gov, Accessed 08/19/11)
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL: “The economy has dealt Nevada a new economic woe. The ignoble race to the bottom of the jobs market has officially bypassed the car-making mecca of Michigan and made its way to Nevada. The Silver State, once the country’s fastest-growing job market, has become the nation’s worst performer. Its May unemployment rate, a state record of 14 percent, is the highest in the land, dislodging Michigan from a distinction it owned for more than four years. … For long-time observers of the state’s economy, Nevada’s new No. 1 status comes as a bit of a shock. ‘I did not think I would live to see the day,’ said Jeremy Aguero, a principal in local research and consulting firm Applied Analysis.” (Jenifer Robinson, Nevada leads the nation in unemployment, Las Vegas Review-Journal, 06/18/10)
