After Failed Stimulus, Government Health Care & Record Debt, Barack Obama & Ben Nelson Push Largest Tax Hike In U.S. History

In 2009, Senator Ben Nelson was instrumental in President Barack Obama’s $825 billion “stimulus” that failed to create the promised jobs.  In 2010, Nelson provided President Obama with the elusive 60th for his $2.5 trillion government health care bill that mandates every American to buy a health care plan.  Two weeks ago President Obama proposed yet another $400 billion in new “stimulus” spending.

And today, President Obama proposed the largest tax hike in U.S. history –a $1.5 trillion tax increase on investors and small businesses that he says is needed to pay for their reckless spending agenda which has driven the federal debt past $14.6 trillion.

  • As a reminder, Ben Nelson once said that raising taxes during a recession is the wrong direction, but as we are all aware when the President comes knocking for a 60th vote, Nelson always abandons his so-called convictions for Mr. Obama.

“According to President Obama, Ben Nelson delivered the final votes for his failed stimulus and was the man who made his government-run healthcare bill the law of the land, so it’s safe to assume that Nelson will be ready to pass his record tax increase on Nebraska businesses,” National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox said today. “It’s painfully clear that President Obama and Senator Nelson simply don’t get it, but Nebraskans will have an opportunity to restore common-sense and fiscal discipline to Washington by electing a pro-growth, pro-jobs individual to the U.S. Senate next year.”

Ben Nelson In 2010 & 2011:
Raising Taxes Is The Wrong Direction

Nelson: “Our Economy Hasn’t Yet Bounced Back And Raising Taxes On Nebraskans To Fund Washington Spending Surely Won’t Speed Recovery. In Fact, It Could Do Just The Opposite, Leading Us To The Wilderness Of A Double Dip Recession.” (Senator Ben Nelson, “Sen. Nelson: Extend Tax Cuts Until Economy Shows Clear Signs Of Recovery,” Press Release, 10/1/10)

Nelson: “Raising Taxes At A Time When Our Economy Remains Fragile Takes Us In The Wrong Direction. That Won’t Create Jobs In Nebraska.” (Senator Ben Nelson, “Sen. Nelson: Debt Reduction Should Focus On Spending Cuts,” Press Release, 7/6/11)

Nelson: “The Wrong Way Is To Try To Raise Taxes At The Same Time. We Need To Get Every Penny Of Spending Cuts First, Before Moving On To Revenues Especially In A Recession.” (Senator Ben Nelson, “Nelson To Business Leaders: Washington Is Out Of Touch,” Press Release, 8/11/11)
