NRSC Statement On Bob Kerrey’s Flip-Flop Decision To Run For The U.S. Senate

National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Communications Director Brian Walsh issued the following statement in response to reports that Democrat Leader Harry Reid has finally twisted Bob Kerrey’s arm enough to get him to run for the open U.S. Senate seat in Nebraska.

“After making a backroom deal to get Nebraska’s senior senator to vote for ObamaCare, it appears Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid has made a deal with an even more liberal Democrat Bob Kerrey.

“As Nebraskans reacquaint themselves with Kerrey they will quickly recognize that living in Greenwich Village for so many years tends to change a person.  Whether it’s his support for cap-and-trade, his advocacy for a government-run health care system or his desire to raise taxes on Nebraska small businesses, Bob Kerrey is a loyal supporter of the Obama agenda and he’s simply out-of-step with Nebraska.”

Kerrey Admitted That Climate Change Legislation Would Destroy Jobs, But He Believed It Was Possible To Create More Jobs Than It Destroyed “With The Right Investment Strategy.” KERREY: “So unless, in my view, it is framed in that kind of moral context, it’s very difficult to get into the economic development argument that you can create more jobs than are likely to be destroyed. I happen to believe that you can, with the right investment strategy. But I don’t think it rings the bell sufficiently given the current economic conditions to get people finally to say, ‘Damn the consequences, I’m going to vote yes.’” (Bob Kerrey, Remarks At Tishman Auditorium, New York City, 10/22/09)

Bob Kerrey Supports Taxpayer Funded Abortions

If Elected President In 1992, Kerrey Vowed To Appoint Pro-Choice Supreme Court Justices, And Enact A Health Care Plan That Pays For Abortions. “[Kerrey] immediately ticked off his positions as though reading from an outline: legislate abortion rights, appoint pro-choice Supreme Court justices, enact a health care plan that pays for abortions, oppose parental notification.” (J. Jennings Moss, “Kerrey’s transformation,” The Washington Times, 2/3/92)

Bob Kerrey Opposes A Balanced Budget Amendment

In 1994, Kerrey Said A Balanced Budget Amendment Would “Sully The Constitution.” KERREY: “Madam President, I rise today to express my opposition to Senate Joint Resolution 41, the balanced budget amendment. The amendment’s sponsors, I understand, believe in it sincerely, and I do genuinely salute their effort. Nevertheless, I have decided, as I have in the past, to continue to oppose this amendment. I do so, Madam President, because I believe in a balanced budget and I believe this proposal will sully the Constitution without actually achieving one.” (Sen. Bob Kerrey, Congressional Record, 3/1/94, p. S2098)

Kerrey Called The Balanced Budget Amendment “Bad Politics And Bad Economic Policy.” “Sen. Bob Kerrey, D-Neb., said Wednesday that a balanced-budget constitutional amendment, which he opposes, would affect the behavior of only 535 Americans: the ones in Congress. ‘I think it’s bad politics and bad economic policy,’ Kerrey said in a speech to the National Legislative Council of the American Association of Retired Persons.” (David C. Beeder, “Balanced Budget Plan Bad Idea, Kerrey Says,” Omaha World Herald, 2/1/95)
