Liberal Fringe Group Attacked CIA Director General David H. Petraeus
After being tied with Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid and others as the most liberal Senator in America, yesterday MoveOn.Org endorsed Sherrod Brown.
Curiously, while the ever-voluble Brown campaign press shop is normally all too happy to trumpet their endorsements, it appears they have been silent on this one. Perhaps that’s because MoveOn.Org has been responsible for some of the most despicable political smears ever. Most notably, they ran a full-page ad in the New York Times attacking four-star General David H. Petraeus as “General Betray Us,” an ad that Sherrod Brown supported.
As the Huffington Post reports:
Progressive advocacy group MoveOn.org came out with more Senate candidate endorsements on Thursday, throwing its large grassroots backing behind Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Reps. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii). (Erin Mershon, MoveOn.org Endorses Tammy Baldwin, Sherrod Brown, Mazie Hirono For Senate, Huffington Post, 7/19/12)
Notably, nowhere on Sherrod Brown’s website does he tout this endorsement from MoveOn.Org.
“This endorsement says more about Sherrod Brown than it does MoveOn.Org,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “Considering Sherrod Brown supported MoveOn.Org’s attack on the patriotism of four-star General David H. Petraeus, it’s no surprise they would want him to make a return to the U.S. Senate.”
In 2007, Sherrod Brown Refused To Condemn MoveOn.Org’s Ad That Referred To Gen. Petraeus As “General Betray Us”
Sherrod Brown Voted Against Condemning MoveOn.Org Ad Attacking Gen. Petraeus As “Gen. Betray Us.” (S. Amdt. 2934, Roll Call Vote #344: Passed 72-25: R: 49-0, D: 23-25, Brown Voted Nay, 9/20/07)
In 2007, MoveOn.org Attacked Gen. David Petraeus As “General Betray Us” And Claimed He Was “Cooking The Books For The White House.” “[Petraeus] Has Already Come Under Fire From MoveOn.org Which In A Full Page Ad In Monday’s New York Times Dubbed Him ‘General Betray Us’ And Alleged He Was ‘Cooking The Books For The White House.’” (Peter Wuetherich, “Petraeus: Battle-Hardened General On The Frontlines In Iraq,” Agence France Presse, 9/10/07)
- Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Joe Biden (D-DE) Said He Didn’t “Buy Into” MoveOn’s Claims And Called Gen. Petraeus “An Honorable Guy.” NBC’s Tim Russert: “MoveOn.org, a liberal democratic group, is taking an ad in The New York Times, and this is what it’s going to be: ‘General Petraeus or General Betray us? Cooking the books for the White House.’ What’s your reaction to that?” Biden: “I don’t buy into that. This is an honorable guy. He’s telling the truth.” (NBC’s “Meet The Press,” 9/9/07)
- Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT) Called MoveOn’s Ad A “Despicable Act Of Slander” That Should Be Condemned. Lieberman: “The personal attack on Gen. David Petraeus launched today by Moveon.org is an outrageous and despicable act of slander that every member of the Congress — Democrat and Republican — has a solemn responsibility to condemn.” (Sen. Joe Lieberman, “Lieberman Urges Leader Reid And Speaker Pelosi To Denounce Moveon.org Attack On General Petraeus,” Press Release, 9/10/07)
