Washington, D.C. – Last night in the final debate of the Massachusetts special election, voters watched as Democrat Ed Markey struggled to defend disturbing revelations over redacted tax forms that hide the truth that Markey resides in Maryland. In a desperate attempt to cover his tracks, Markey went so far as to flat out lie to Massachusetts voters about his primary residence. With less than a week remaining in the race, Ed Markey must come clean about his residency, his taxes, and his lies.
The Boston Globe reports this morning, “Markey said his address had been redacted on his tax forms due to an accountant’s error. Throughout the campaign, Markey has faced questions about whether his primary residence is in Massachusetts or Maryland.”
REPEAT: Markey blamed his accountant and claimed that he’s lived in the same house in Malden for the last 64 years.
The truth is, Ed Markey has lived full-time in Chevy Chase, Maryland for over 20 years now. Instead of telling the truth, Markey directly lied – creating a MAJOR issue in the last week of the campaign.
After previously redacting his tax returns, Markey claimed that he indeed filed taxes in Massachusetts, even though he most certainly stayed over 183 days in his Maryland home – a number that signifies residency under Maryland Law.
Under Maryland residency law and the public record indicates that Ed Markey may owe Maryland state taxes having wrongly filed in Massachusetts.
Five critical questions remain for Ed Markey:
1. If Markey lived in Malden for 64 years, why was his Chevy Chase home listed as Markey’s primary residence until 2002?
2. Does Markey spend the aggregate more than 183 days of the taxable year in Massachusetts, including days spent partially in and partially out of Massachusetts, in order to meet the Massachusetts requirement to be considered a full-time resident? (NOTE: The House was only in session for 152 days last year, and 175 days the year before)
3. Will Markey release an un-redacted copy of his taxes?
4. Before releasing his tax returns to the press, why didn’t Markey or his campaign ask his accountant to list his city/state of residence? Why didn’t they unredact the residence if indeed it shows Massachusetts as his home?
5. As this 2010 video shows, the residents of Malden admit that Markey never shows up and doesn’t really live there. Why did Ed Markey lie during the debate?
“In the middle of the debate, Ed Markey claimed that he has lived full-time in the same residence for the last sixty-four years, which is a direct lie,” said NRSC Communications Director Brad Dayspring. “The fact is that either Markey is lying about his residency on his tax forms, or he owes the state of Maryland back taxes. If a candidate like Ed Markey is able to lie so easily during the debate to the people of the Commonwealth, what else is he willing to lie about in the United States Senate?”
