Markey’s Unredacted Tax Returns Raise More Questions

Washington, D.C. – Following immense pressure to come clean with Massachusetts voters about his residency, his taxes, and the lies he told during last night’s debate for the special election Senate seat, Democrat Ed Markey today released his unredacted tax forms which raise serious questions over Markey’s residency.

FACT: Ed Markey listed his Chevy Chase home as his primary residence until 2002, when he first began thinking of taking John Kerry’s seat in the Senate. He has lived full-time in Chevy Chase, Maryland for over 20 years now, but now has revealed that he filed taxes in Massachusetts – even though he most certainly stayed over 183 days in his Maryland home – a number that signifies residency under Maryland Law.

According to Maryland residency law and the public record, serious questions remain about Markey’s place of residency, place of domicile, and whether he owes Maryland state taxes for having wrongly filed in Massachusetts?

QUESTION: Does Markey actually spend the aggregate more than 183 days of the taxable year in Massachusetts – including days spent partially in and partially out of Massachusetts – in order to meet the Massachusetts requirement to be considered a full-time resident? (NOTE: The average number of days per year the House has been in session since 1976 is 140 – so Markey’s official duties in Congress fail to meet the 183 days required).

REALITY: Ed Markey’s legal residence is not in Massachusetts given the evidence that he previously declared his Chevy Chase home as his principal residence and that he clearly maintains many more ties to Chevy Chase than to Massachusetts (Just ask Markey’s wife who told a Baltimore newspaper she lived in Chevy Chase with her husband or watch this video which reveals that Markey’s supposed neighbors in Malden have never seen him). As the complaint filed this morning states, Markey’s intent appears to be to live in Maryland, he is active in his Maryland community, and his wife owns a Maryland business.

“We appreciate that Mr. Markey finally released his unredacted tax forms, but they raise far more questions than they answer. The fact is that either Mr. Markey lied about his full-time residency, or he hasn’t paid his fair share of taxes to the state of Maryland,” said NRSC Communications Director Brad Dayspring. If Markey has lived in the same Malden home for 64 years, why don’t his neighbors even know he lives on their street? Why did he declare his Maryland home as his primary residence until he realized that he wanted to run for Senate?”
