LOUISVILLE — Fancy Farm is considered the official kickoff of fall campaigns in Kentucky. But the airwaves were already filled with ads by the two U.S. Senate candidates, Republican incumbent Mitch McConnell and Democratic challenger Bruce Lunsford.
Those ads have nearly all been about the price of gas, an issue Republicans in general and McConnell especially believe is a winner for their party. McConnell talks non-stop about drilling for more domestic oil while pursuing alternative forms of energy and conserving more of what we have. ( MORE)

At a press conference at a local oil field, Wicker said there’s a need for Congress to act now to lower gas prices.

U.S. Sen. John Sununu called yesterday for expanded off-shore drilling and new nuclear plants as part of "an appropriate balanced approach to our energy problems."
Sununu, R-N.H., said the United States needs a combination of conservation and new production of oil -- "use a little less, and produce a little more" -- as a matter of economics and national security. The two rivals in the North Carolina Senate race say they support a compromise energy proposal put forward recently by a bipartisan group of 10 senators.

U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) scores a comfortable lead over Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) in the Senate race, a new SurveyUSA Poll finds. The incumbent Republican leads the Oregon House Speaker 49 percent to 37 percent, according to the numbers released Thursday.
Smith campaign spokeswoman Lindsay Gilbride was optimistic about the campaign's chances.

As the price of gas continues to strain all Americans, Democrats in Congress chose to go on vacation – something many Americans cannot do this year. Instead of staying in town to work out a solution, or at least debate and vote on multiple proposals, Democrats departed Washington faster then the price of gas has risen. Amazingly, while they are in the majority and setting the agenda, Democrats are obstructing any solutions on energy from consideration.
Before leaving town Democrats provided valuable insights as to why they are unwilling to act in any capacity on behalf of all Americans to address the current energy crisis. Case in point is Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi ( MORE)
