NRSC Chairman Senator Cornyn Frames the 2010 Midterm Elections

With 24 hours until voters across America cast their ballots, NRSC Chairman Senator John Cornyn, writing in Politico, frames the 2010 midterm elections: Voters are focused on job creation and government spending – and rightly outraged at Washington’s broken promises to make things better. The White House promised that the stimulus bill would keep the unemployment rate below 8 percent. Yet for 18 straight months, it’s been above 9.5 percent. More than 15 million Americans remain out of work. President Barack Obama promised to cut the deficit in half. Yet the last two fiscal years had the two largest deficits in U.S. history — each more than one trillion dollars. Our national debt has increased by 29 percent since the beginning of the Obama administration. It’s now more than $13 trillion.  Obama promised that families making less than $250,000 would not see any kind of tax increase — “not one single…

NRSC Statement On The Alaska Senate Race

Regarding today’s inaccurate report from ABC News suggesting that Republican leaders are no longer supporting Joe Miller in Alaska NRSC Executive Director Rob Jesmer said: “While I’m sure ABC News enjoyed leading Politico’s Playbook this morning, it might have been more useful if they had actually taken a moment to contact the NRSC before running this inaccurate story. Joe Miller not only has the full support of the NRSC, but he’s actually featured prominently in our TV ad which is running still today statewide in Alaska.” In addition, NRSC Chairman John Cornyn was asked about this story on ABC’s This Week earlier today and said: AMANPOUR: “Let me ask you about Joe Miller in Alaska – our Jon Karl, political correspondent, is saying the GOP is basically giving up on Joe Miller or thinking he’s not going to win.” SEN. CORNYN: “That’s not the case – what we have done,…

In case you missed it, Colorado’s appointed Senator Michael Bennet flip-flopped again last night and held a tele-town hall meeting with President Obama just days after telling CNN that the President just isn’t that popular with many voters in his state, particularly Independents. On CNN this week, Jessica Yellin asked Bennet why he campaigned with Obama during his contentious Democrat primary, but ran away from his party’s leader during the general. Bennet explained that the President was unpopular with Independents in his state and that he “should be in places around the country where it will be helpful.” BENNET: “The – personal reaction by the Independent voters that you’ve described based on a lot, uh… the political rhetoric that’s gone on back and forth might not make it helpful. I think the president should be in places around the country where it will be helpful. And we are running this…

Fisher Enjoys a Night Out After Essentially Throwing in the Towel

And after throwing in the towel in the key swing state of Ohio, failed jobs czar Lee Fisher took some time for himself by bowling, singing karaoke, sliding down a fire pole, and grabbing breakfast in “a nearly empty IHOP.” The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports: After karaoke, there was bowling and then the firemen’s brass pole — he slid down not once, but twice — followed by a road trip in the clear-skied darkness for breakfast in a nearly empty IHOP… This was not the plot to a “Hangover” sequel or the script for a college prankster movie. It was the first all-nighter pulled by underdog U.S. Senate candidate Lee Fisher, 59, since he was in law school more than three decades ago. No alcohol was involved, but recreation was, mixed with the most serious of purposes… Fisher, who had earlier changed from a tie-less suit to jeans and an OSU sweater…

Ron Johnson leads Russ Feingold 53-44 in the US Senate race… Wisconsin has one of the largest enthusiasm gaps of any state in the country. Although it appears Democrats will have turnout issues pretty much everywhere the problem is unusually severe in Wisconsin… Barack Obama’s popularity in Wisconsin has declined at a rate much faster than the rest of the country… While a lot of what’s going on in the state can be explained by those macro factors it would be wrong to sell the GOP’s candidates, particularly Ron Johnson, short. Johnson has proven to be one of the strongest Republican Senate hopefuls anywhere in the country. 51% of voters have…
