The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is asking liberal Congressman Martin Heinrich today to tell New Mexicans whether or not he shares President Obama’s view that the serious problems we have seen on the economy and the recent turmoil in the Middle East are just “bumps in the road.”

Speaking on CBS’ 60 Minutes last night about the current problems in the Middle East, President Obama said:

“I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road…” (CBS’s “60 Minutes,” 9/23/12)

These are the same words he used about our economic problems in a speech last year:

“There are always going to be bumps on the road to recovery.” (President Barack Obama, Remarks, Toledo, OH, 6/3/11)

“It’s typical of President Obama and the Democrat leadership to dismiss serious problems as being ‘bumps in the road’. While they might just be inconvenient to them, to everyone else, these ‘bumps in the road’ are real and they amount to some of the biggest diplomatic and economic challenges we’ve seen in our lifetime,” NRSC spokesman Jahan Wilcox said today. “Liberal Martin Heinrich needs to tell New Mexicans whether he shares President Obama’s casual view of the position we’re in. Voters want and expect strong leadership from their elected officials, as well as real policy solutions, but these are not things we are seeing from Democrats in Washington these days.”

President Obama and congressional Democrats are dismissive of these problems even as evidence mounts about the scale of the challenges this country faces. On the economy, the recovery continues to be long, slow and hard for families across America:

“It’s simply remarkable that liberal Congressman Martin Heinrich voted for a healthcare bill that cut $3.1 billion from seniors in New Mexico who depend on Medicare,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “This non-partisan report is a sobering reminder that Martin Heinrich’s liberal agenda is wrong for New Mexico.”

President Obama’s Senior Campaign Aide Has Bragged That President Obama “Achieved” $700 Billion In “Cuts In Medicare.” CUTTER: “Well, you know ask the wealthy to pay a little bit more. Cut waste from the government. Reform Medicare. More than $300 billion in savings from Medicare. On top of the savings we’ve already achieved. You know I heard Mitt Romney deride the $700 billion cuts in Medicare that the president achieved through health care reform.” (CBS’s “Face The Nation,” 8/12/12)

Heinrich’s Medicare Cuts Will Jeopardize Benefits For Seniors – Reducing Access To Care And Driving Millions From Medicare Advantage:

This estimated percentage would continue to increase, reaching roughly 25 percent in 2030 and 40 percent by 2050. In practice, providers could not sustain continuing negative margins and, absent legislative changes, would have to withdraw from providing services to Medicare beneficiaries, merge with other provider groups, or shift substantial portions of Medicare costs to their non-Medicare, non-Medicaid payers.” (“Projected Expenditures Under An Illustrative Scenario With Alternative Payment Updates To Medicare Providers,” Center For Medicare & Medicaid Services, 5/13/11)

Enrollment would plummet by about 50 percent. Seniors leaving the private plans would still have health insurance under traditional Medicare, but many might face higher out-of-pocket costs.” (Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, “Report Says Health Care Will Cover More, Cost More,” The Associated Press, 4/23/10)

In a desperate attempt to cover-up his liberal tax-and-spend record, Congressman Martin Heinrich’s campaign has reached a new low by falsely claiming that Heather Wilson voted to increase her pay.

The Santa Fe New Mexican has discovered that during Wilson’s time in Congress, there was never a stand-alone vote on ‘Raises for Congress,’ therefore it’s not possible that she voted to increase her salary while in office.

As the Santa Fe New Mexican reports:

Accuracy: “It is true that between 2001 and 2006, the annual salaries of Congress members increased from $145,100 to $165,200. And it’s true that in the years Heinrich has been in Congress, no raises have been given to members. But the charge that Wilson voted herself six pay raises is misleading.” (Steve Terrell, Ad Watch: Humorous spot seeks to portray Wilson as relic of the 1990s, Santa Fe New Mexican, 9/17/12)

“Given that liberal Congressman Martin Heinrich has voted for higher taxes and more spending, it’s no wonder he’s decided to distort his opponent’s record,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee Spokesman (NRSC) Jahan Wilcox. “This desperate attack just adds further proof that Heinrich and his liberal agenda is wrong for New Mexico.”

Nearly four years ago, liberal Congressman Martin Heinrich rammed an $825 billion stimulus into law that was supposed to “create or save” 22,000 jobs in New Mexico, yet today’s jobs report reiterates that his failed economic policies are not working.

As the Wall Street Journal reports:

JOB GROWTH SLOWS SHARPLY IN AUGUST: Job growth slowed sharply in August, the Labor Department said Friday. Total nonfarm payrolls increased by 96,000, lower than the 125,000 gain expected by Wall Street economists. Adding to the sense of weakness, job growth in the past two months were revised down by 41,000. The unemployment rate declined to 8.1% in August from 8.3% in the previous month but the drop was due to a smaller labor force. Economists forecast the unemployment rate to hold steady at 8.3%. Average hourly earnings were flat at $23.52. Earnings are up 1.7% in the past year. The average workweek was unchanged at 34.3 hours. (Greg Robb, Job growth slows sharply in August, Wall Street Journal’s Market Watch, 9/7/12)

Notably, according to Heinrich and his fellow Democrats if their policies actually worked the national unemployment rate would be well below 6 percent by now.

“We’ve tried the failed policies of Congressman Heinrich and today’s report is just further proof that his tax-and-spend agenda is not working,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “Martin Heinrich’s record is wrong for New Mexico and it’s time to send a true bipartisan reformer like Heather Wilson to the Senate.”

Years Of Reckless Spending Now Driving Country Off A Fiscal Cliff

WASHINGTON – Last month the top Senate Democrat leaders who are overseeing Martin Heinrich’s campaign for Senate made clear that they were willing to allow the country to go over a “fiscal cliff” unless their demands for massive tax hikes were met.

But today, a new report from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) made clear that as a result of the Democrats’ reckless tax-and-spend policies, we are already headed in that direction. The report shows that the economy would go into a recession and unemployment would increase if the Democrats’ proposed small business tax hike and massive defense cuts are put into effect.

“Today’s report is just the latest evidence that the failed economic policies trumpeted by Martin Heinrich are driving our country over a fiscal cliff,”National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox said today. “From the reckless spending to the massive expansion of government in ObamaCare, Martin Heinrich has marched in virtual lockstep with Democrats and their failed policies are hurting New Mexicans.

“Under the Heinrich-Pelosi economy, we’ve had 43 straight months of unemployment above 8 percent, a skyrocketing debt that’s now reached almost $16 trillion, and four straight years of trillion dollar deficits. This report is yet another big wake-up call that New Mexicans simply can’t afford four more years of Heinrich’s failed economic policies,” Wilcox concluded.

Last Night, Heinrich Voted Against A Full Extension Of The 2001 & 2003 Tax Cuts

After vigorously opposing President Obama’s 2010 tax cut compromise, last night liberal Congressman Martin Heinrich voted once again against extending the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts for every working New Mexican.

Nearly two years ago, President Obama said that failing to extend these tax cuts would be a chilling prospect for the American people. Additionally he said that if these tax cuts were not extended then the average family would pay an additional $3,000 in taxes to the federal government.

Notably, President Obama has said that, “you don’t raise taxes” on anybody during a recession.

“After opposing President Obama’s 2010 tax cut compromise, Martin Heinrich reaffirmed his extreme liberal agenda when he voted once again to raise taxes on every working New Mexican,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “With our economy slowing down, Heinrich would be wise to follow President Obama’s advice that you don’t raise taxes on anybody during a recession.”

BACKGROUND …

Last Night Martin Heinrich Voted To Raise Taxes On Every Working New Mexican

Heinrich Voted Against Extending The 2001 & 2003 Tax Cuts. (H.R. 8, CQ Vote #545: Motion agreed to, by a vote of 256-171, Heinrich Voted Nay)

ASSOCIATED PRESS: “House Republicans approved a full plate of Bush-era tax cuts Wednesday that they said could help shore up a still-frail national economy. … Republicans moved to renew the Bush tax cuts for every working American. The cuts will otherwise expire Dec. 31.” (Andrew Taylor, House approves Bush-erta tax cuts, Associated Press, 8/2/12)

And Martin Heinrich Was To The Left Of President Obama On The 2010 Tax Cut Compromise

Heinrich Voted Against The Tax Cut Compromise. “Levin, D-Mich., motion to concur in the Senate amendment to the House amendment to the Senate amendment to the bill that would extend the 2001- and 2003-enacted tax cuts for all taxpayers for two years and revive the lapsed estate tax, setting the tax rate at 35 percent on estates worth more than $5 million for 2011 and 2012. It also would extend unemployment insurance benefits for 13 months and cut the employee portion of the Social Security tax by 2 percentage points.” (H.R. 4853, CQ Vote #647: Motion agreed to, thus clearing the bill for the president, by a vote of 277-148: R 138-36; D 139-112, 12/17/10, Heinrich Voted Nay)

President Obama Said A Failure To Extend The 2001 And 2003 Tax Cuts, “Would Be A Chilling Prospect For The American People Whose Taxes Are Currently Scheduled To Go Up On Jan. 1” President Obama: “This would be a chilling prospect for the American people whose taxes are currently scheduled to go up on Jan. 1 because of arrangements that were made back in 2001 and 2003 under the Bush tax cuts. I am not willing to let that happen. I know there’s some people in my own party and in the other party who would rather prolong this battle, even if we can’t reach a compromise. But I’m not willing to let working families across this country become collateral damage for political warfare here in Washington.” (“President Obama: Tax Cut Compromise Is Right Thing To Do,” www.thehill.com, 12/7/10)

· President Obama: “The American People Didn’t Send Us Here To Wage Symbolic Battles Or Win Symbolic Victories. They Would Much Rather Have The Comfort Of Knowing That When They Open Their First Paycheck On January Of 2011, It Won’t Be Smaller Than It Was Before, All Because Washington Decided They Preferred To Have A Fight And Failed To Act.”(“President Obama: Tax Cut Compromise Is Right Thing To Do,” www.thehill.com, 12/7/10)

· President Obama Said That Failure To Pass A Tax Cut Compromise Would Cause Taxes To Go Up By $3,000 For A Typical Family. President Obama: “Make no mistake: Allowing taxes to go up on all Americans would have raised taxes by $3,000 for a typical American family. And that could cost our economy well over a million jobs.” (“President Obama: Tax Cut Compromise Is Right Thing To Do,” www.thehill.com, 12/7/10)

“While nobody has fought harder to advance the anti-energy, job-killing agenda of environmental groups than Congressman Heinrich, it’s truly incomprehensible that these groups think Mr. Heinrich’s opponent poisoned the drinking water in New Mexico,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “This nasty attack is just another reminder that since Heinrich can’t run on his own record, his allies have decided to viciously tear down his opponent for him.”

BACKGROUND…

Heinrich Has Been The Top Advocate For Extreme D.C. Environmentalists

Heinrich Opposes The Entire Keystone Pipeline, Which He Called The “Tar Sands Pipeline,” Saying It Was Not “Clean” Or “Domestic.” “U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (NM-1) released the following statement today after President Obama denied the pending application for the construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline: ‘I’m committed to an energy future for our nation that is both clean and domestic. The tar sands pipeline is neither. Through American ingenuity we can unleash the full potential of clean, home-grown energy and put even more New Mexicans to work.’” (Congressman Martin Heinrich, “Heinrich Statement On The Tar Sands Pipeline,” Press Release, 1/18/12)

Heinrich Voted Against Requiring The White House To Make A Permitting Decision On Keystone XL By November 1, 2011. “Passage of the bill that would require the administration to make a permitting decision on the Keystone XL oil pipeline within 30 days after the final environmental impact statement is issued or by Nov. 1, whichever is earlier. It would direct the president, working through the Energy secretary, to coordinate with federal agencies to make sure necessary review stages are expedited.” (H.R. 1938, CQ Vote #650: Passed by a vote of 279-147: R 232-3; D 47-144, 7/26/11, Heinrich Voted Nay)

Heinrich Said He Was Proud Of His Vote For The Cap-And-Trade Bill. “Heinrich said he’s proud of his votes on two of the most controversial issues of the 111th Congress – the Obama health care legislation and a so-called cap-and-trade energy bill designed to curb greenhouse emissions.” (Michael Coleman, “A Race Of Contrasts,” Albuquerque Journal, 10/10/10)

Heinrich Falsely Claims That He’s Fighting For Lower Taxes

Liberal Congressman Martin Heinrich today released a false ad claiming that he’s fighting for lower taxes; yet in Washington Heinrich is actually more liberal than President Obama on the issue of taxes, particularly on small businesses, having led the charge to raise them at every possible opportunity.

Heinrich joined the President in supporting his $1.76 trillion healthcare bill – which through the individual mandate was one of the largest tax increases ever on the middle class – raised taxes on small businesses by $500 billion and slapped medical device manufacturers with an additional 2.3 percent innovation tax.

Heinrich then outdid the President on taxes when he voted against the 2010 tax cut compromise which, had Heinrich and his far-left allies prevailed, would have raised taxes on every single worker and small business in New Mexico.

“Martin Heinrich has spent his entire career in Washington, leading the far-left’s demands for higher taxes and more government spending,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “Between his support for government-run healthcare and his efforts to kill the 2010 tax cut compromise, Heinrich’s record on taxes is more liberal than the President of the United States.”

MARTIN HEINRICH SUPPORTED ALL OF THE TAXES IN THE HEALTHCARE LAW

Heinrich Voted For The Health Care Reform Law. (H.R. 3590, CQ Vote #165: Motion agreed to, thus clearing the bill for the president, by a vote of 219-212: R 0-178; D 219-34, 3/21/10, Heinrich Voted Yea)

Heinrich “Strongly Denounced” The Tax Cut Compromise. “Among all members of the delegation, Rep. Martin Heinrich most strongly denounced the tax deal. ‘From what I’ve seen so far, I’m not inclined to support it,’ Heinrich said in a Journal interview. ‘There is a difference between compromise and extortion, and I’m having a real hard time swallowing the fact that congressional Republican leaders are holding up so many things there are broad support for just for these tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. Frankly, we can’t afford them.’” (Michael Coleman, “Most of N.M. Delegation Cool To Deal,” Albuquerque Journal, 12/8/10)

Heinrich Did Not Support Extending Tax Cuts For All Americans And Said, “We Can’t Pay Down The Bush Administration’s Debt And Fund Critical Programs Like Medicare And Social Security If We’re Writing Checks For $900 Billion To The Richest Americans . . . .” “Rep. Heinrich has consistently advocated for securing the future of the middle class and ignoring the temptation to pile on to the deficit as the right thing to do. Rep. Heinrich supports extending middle-class tax cuts, which are set to expire at the end of the year, and opposing Republicans demands to extend tax breaks for the ultra-rich. Rep. Heinrich said last week in a statement, ‘We can’t pay down the Bush administration’s debt and fund critical programs like Medicare and Social Security if we’re writing checks for $900 billion to the richest Americans like Donald Trump and Tiger Woods. Anybody who’s ever balanced a family checkbook can see through the Republicans’ wild claims.’” (Congressman Martin Heinrich, “Heinrich To White House: ‘Don’t Back Down,’” Press Release, 12/8/10)

Heinrich Signed A Letter To Then-House Speaker Pelosi That Stated Democratic Opposition To The Tax Cut Compromise. “In response to President Obama’s deal on the Bush tax cuts, U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich signed a letter initiated by Rep.
“Not only did liberal Martin Heinrich vote for ObamaCare, but today he reaffirmed his support for what is the largest tax increase ever on the middle class,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “This election will be a clear contrast between Congressman Heinrich and his support for a bigger government and Heather Wilson who will continue to support pro-growth, pro-jobs initiatives that will get New Mexico working again.”

Half of all small business income would face higher taxes.
More than a quarter of American workers’ jobs are at risk. “According to U.S. Census data,” says NFIB, small businesses “employ more than 25 percent of the total workforce.” Raising taxes on small businesses threatens these jobs – the last thing we need to do in a weak economy.
