“Richard Carmona loves to brag about his resume, but what he doesn’t tell you is that on numerous occasions he has bullied his colleagues, been fired for his actions and then proceeds to sue his former employer,” National Republican Senatorial Committee Executive Director Rob Jesmer said today. “This is a critical election for our country, and Arizonans deserve to know who the real Richard Carmona is.”

· Carmona Colleague: “Never in my entire medical career have I seen such gross interference by a hospital administrator without the slightest attempt to reach a cooperative understanding.” (“Squaring Off Over Nominee,” Los Angeles Times, 7/8/02)

Richard Carmona’s Employment History

· Forced Out Of Pima County Job: “The embattled head of the Pima health care system offered his resignation on the eve of a board of supervisors meeting at which he might have been fired.” (The Associated Press, 7/13/99)

· Failed To Get Renominated As Surgeon General: “It is unclear who decided Carmona’s time as Surgeon General is over.” (“U.S. Surgeon General To Return To Tucson After Four-Year Term,” The Arizona Daily Star, 8/1/06)

While U.S. Congressman Jeff Flake has unveiled his six point plan for economic growth and prosperity, earlier this week Democrat Richard Carmona revealed that his economic plan was to double-down on President Obama’s failed economic policies of higher taxes and more government spending.

Carmona told The Hill that he will oppose a full extension of the 2001 and 2003 Congressional tax cuts. According to reports, this will cost small business owners in Arizona with $3.5 billion in lost economic output and could kill 13,000 jobs in the Grand Canyon State.

As The Hill reports:

Notably, Carmona is also a strong supporter of President Obama’s $1.76 trillion, job-killing healthcare law.

“Richard Carmona’s economic plan is quite simple: he stands united with his fellow liberal Democrats in raising taxes on small business owners in Arizona, which could kill 13,000 jobs in the Grand Canyon State,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “It’s no surprise President Obama recruited Richard Carmona to run for Senate, because he will clearly be a reliable vote for the President’s tax-and-spend agenda. Arizonans need Jeff Flake who has a plan that will actually reduce the debt and get our country working again.”

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is asking President Obama’s handpicked candidate Richard Carmona today to tell Arizonans whether or not he shares President Obama’s view that the serious problems we have seen on the economy and the recent turmoil in the Middle East are just “bumps in the road.”

Speaking on CBS’ 60 Minutes last night about the current problems in the Middle East, President Obama said:

“I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road…” (CBS’s “60 Minutes,” 9/23/12)

These are the same words he used about our economic problems in a speech last year:

“There are always going to be bumps on the road to recovery.” (President Barack Obama, Remarks, Toledo, OH, 6/3/11)

“It’s typical of President Obama and the Democrat leadership to dismiss serious problems as being ‘bumps in the road’. While they might just be inconvenient to them, to everyone else, these ‘bumps in the road’ are real and they amount to some of the biggest diplomatic and economic challenges we’ve seen in our lifetime,” NRSC spokesman Jahan Wilcox said today. “Given that Richard Carmona is the handpicked candidate of President Obama, he needs tell Arizonans whether he shares the President’s casual view of the position we’re in. Voters want and expect strong leadership from Government and real policy solutions, and these are things we are not seeing from Democrats in Washington these days.”

President Obama and congressional Democrats are dismissive of these problems even as evidence mounts about the scale of the challenges this country faces. On the economy, the recovery continues to be long, slow and hard for families across America:

“It’s simply remarkable that Democrat Richard Carmona supported a healthcare bill that cut $11.8 billion from seniors in Arizona who depend on Medicare,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “This non-partisan report is a sobering reminder that Richard Carmona’s liberal agenda is wrong for the Grand Canyon State.”

This estimated percentage would continue to increase, reaching roughly 25 percent in 2030 and 40 percent by 2050. In practice, providers could not sustain continuing negative margins and, absent legislative changes, would have to withdraw from providing services to Medicare beneficiaries, merge with other provider groups, or shift substantial portions of Medicare costs to their non-Medicare, non-Medicaid payers.” (“Projected Expenditures Under An Illustrative Scenario With Alternative Payment Updates To Medicare Providers,” Center For Medicare & Medicaid Services, 5/13/11)

Enrollment would plummet by about 50 percent. Seniors leaving the private plans would still have health insurance under traditional Medicare, but many might face higher out-of-pocket costs.” (Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, “Report Says Health Care Will Cover More, Cost More,” The Associated Press, 4/23/10)

Less Than 100,000 Jobs Created For The Month Of August, Labor Force Participation Rate Falls To Lowest Point In 31 Years

Nearly four years ago, President Barack Obama – who personally recruited Richard Carmona to run as a Democrat – rammed an $825 billion stimulus into law that was supposed to “create or save” 3.5 million jobs, yet today’s jobs report reiterates that their failed economic policies are not working.

As the Wall Street Journal reports:

JOB GROWTH SLOWS SHARPLY IN AUGUST: Job growth slowed sharply in August, the Labor Department said Friday. Total nonfarm payrolls increased by 96,000, lower than the 125,000 gain expected by Wall Street economists. Adding to the sense of weakness, job growth in the past two months were revised down by 41,000. The unemployment rate declined to 8.1% in August from 8.3% in the previous month but the drop was due to a smaller labor force. Economists forecast the unemployment rate to hold steady at 8.3%. Average hourly earnings were flat at $23.52. Earnings are up 1.7% in the past year. The average workweek was unchanged at 34.3 hours. (Greg Robb, Job growth slows sharply in August, Wall Street Journal’s Market Watch, 9/7/12)

Notably, according to Carmona and his fellow Democrats if their policies actually worked the national unemployment rate would be well below 6 percent by now.

“We’ve tried the failed policies of President Obama and Richard Carmona and today’s report is just further proof that their tax-and-spend agenda is not working,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “Arizonans simply cannot afford Richard Carmona’s failed economic leadership and it’s time to send a true reformer like Jeff Flake to the Senate.”

BACKGROUND….

President Obama Promised The Stimulus Would ‘Create Or Save’ 3.5 Million Jobs

ASSOCIATED PRESS: The Obama administration is defending its claim that the $787 billion economic stimulus plan will save or create 3.5 million jobs before 2011 even while conceding that unemployment will likely continue to rise beyond its earlier predictions. (Stimulus plan will create or save 3.5 million jobs, White House says, Associated Press, 05/11/09)

National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Chairman John Cornyn made the following statement this evening regarding the Arizona Senate race and the nomination of Jeff Flake as our Republican candidate:

“I congratulate Jeff Flake on winning the Arizona Republican Senate Primary. The difference in this race is clear. Jeff Flake has spent his entire career leading the charge against wasteful spending in Washington and trying to balance our budget.

“Meanwhile, his opponent Richard Carmona is too liberal for Arizona, because not only is he the only Democrat to be personally recruited by President Obama, but he has also expressed strong support for Obamacare.

“It’s time we balance the budget and get our country working again and we can do that with Jeff Flake as the next U.S. Senator from Arizona.”

BACKGROUND….

Last year – despite the fact that in 2010 Senator John McCain was easily reelected, we picked up two U.S. House seats, increased our majorities in the statehouse by a two-to-one margin and outnumbered Democrats by 150,000 people – national Democrats consistently talked about widening the 2012 battleground map into Arizona.

Since that time the condition has actually worsened for Democrats in Arizona. Republicans now hold a 180,000 voter registration advantage over Democrats and President Obama remains deeply unpopular in Arizona.

The Cook Political Report rates Arizona’s Senate race as “likely Republican,” likewise the Rothenberg Political Report rates it as “lean Republican,” and the National Journal rates this contest as the 14th most likely race to change hands in November.

With the Arizona wind at our back, Republicans will continue to tout Jeff Flake’s fiscal, pro-jobs record, while contrasting that with the fact that Richard Carmona was the only Democrat who was personally recruited by President Obama.

JEFF FLAKE’S FISCAL, PRO-JOBS RECORD:

Lead the charge against earmarks and wasteful spending in Washington. (Jeff Flake, Government Reform, Accessed 8/27/12)

Voted against ObamaCare. (H.R. 3590, CQ Vote #165: Motion Agreed To 219-212: R 0-178; D 219-34, 3/21/10, Flake Voted Nay)

Voted against President Barack Obama’s failed $825 billion stimulus. (H.R. 1, CQ Vote # 46: Adopted 244-188: R 0-177; D 224-11, 1/28/09, Flake Voted Nay)

Supports extending the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts for families and small businesses in Arizona. (Andrew Taylor, House approves Bush-erta tax cuts, Associated Press, 8/2/12)

DEMOCRAT RICHARD CARMONA’S RECORD:

“On September 23, President Obama called Richard Carmona to encourage him to run,” said one Democratic strategist. (Alexander Burns, Obama courts Ariz. Senate candidate, may contest state ‘heavily’, Politico, 10/06/11)

Carmona Supports President Obama’s Job-Killing Healthcare Law. “Carmona served as the 17th surgeon general of the United States under President George W. Bush. Last year, he participated in series of health care town halls that the congresswoman held in Tucson, Sierra Vista and Green Valley. ‘The issue facing our country is how do we get the best care for the most people at the least cost,’ Carmona said. ‘We spend more for health care than any other nation on Earth, but the metrics of our results don’t reflect that. We need to move toward a health care system, not the sick care system that we have today. This legislation moves us closer to that. This bill is not perfect. But these are complex issues and we must move forward. And then I hope we can sit down with level heads and make it even better for the benefit of the American people.’” (“U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Announces Support For Historic Health Insurance Reform Legislation,” Congresswoman Giffords Press Release, 3/20/10)

Notably, this isn’t the first time Carmona has tried to mislead Arizonans, as last month he bizarrely denied that President Obama even called him during the recruiting process.

“It is strange that Richard Carmona denies being called and recruited by President Obama after confirming these facts as recently as two months ago,”said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “The reality is President Obama wants Carmona in the Senate because he knows that he will be a loyal supporter of his liberal agenda, including Obamacare which cut $700 billion from Medicare.”

President Barack Obama & Democrat Leader Harry Reid Personally Recruited Richard Carmona

Carmona is one of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s favorite candidates and was personally courted by President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to get into the race. (David Catanese, Bivens clears the way for Carmona, Politico, 3/27/2012)

Obama personally called Carmona and asked him to run, and Carmona told The Hill in February that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (Wash.) were also among those who reached out to court him. (Josh Lederman, Democrat Bivens drops out of Arizona Senate primary, clearing way for Carmona, The Hill, 3/27/2010)

Two years after Democrat Richard Carmona announced that he was supporting ObamaCare, the Supreme Court today has affirmed Carmona’s support of President Obama’s agenda ahead of Arizona seniors and small businesses. In doing so, the Court has made clear what is at stake in November’s election.

“The Supreme Court’s decision makes clear that the only way to stop the massive tax increases, government spending, and cuts to Medicare contained in the healthcare law is to elect a conservative Republican Senator who will work to repeal ObamaCare – not President Obama’s handpicked recruit Democrat Richard Carmona.” National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox said today.

BACKGROUND….

Carmona Supported ObamaCare

In September 2009, Carmona Said Health Care Reform Was Essential To Contain Escalating Costs. “Before the members of the public spoke, former U.S. Surgeon General and Tucson resident Dr. Richard Carmona told the crowd that health-care reform is essential to contain escalating costs and to change a system that focuses on ‘sick care’ rather than health. He added that he’s been disappointed at how many of the forums on national reform have devolved into shouting matches.” (Stephanie Innes, “Crowd Attentive, At Times Rowdy,” Arizona Daily Star, 9/1/09)

In March 2010, Carmona Announced Support For ObamaCare, Stating “We Need To Move Toward A Health Care System, Not The Sick Care System That We Have Today. This Legislation Moves Us Closer To That. This Bill Is Not Perfect. But These Are Complex Issues And We Must Move Forward.” “Carmona served as the 17th surgeon general of the United States under President George W.

The Cost Of ObamaCare To Arizona Alone

The Heritage Foundation Estimates From 2014 To 2020 ObamaCare Will Cost Arizona An Additional $544.5 Million. (Edmund Haislmaier and Brian Blasé, “Obamacare: Impact On States,” The Heritage Foundation, 7/1/10)

Meanwhile Premiums Are Rising In Arizona

Arizona State Employees Told To Expect To See Health-Insurance Costs To Rise As Much As 37 Percent. “State and university employees with families can expect to see their monthly health-insurance costs rise as much as 37 percent next year, depending on the type of plan they choose. Figures provided by the Arizona Department of Administration show that health plans for families and single adults with children will shoulder the most-expensive premium increases beginning Jan. 1, while individuals will pay modest increases.” (Kent Alltucker, “State Tells Employees Health Insurance Will Rocket,” The Arizona Republic, 7/21/11)

Arizona Department Of Administration Blames ObamaCare For Increases. “Alan Ecker, Department of Administration spokesman, said health reform ‘is responsible for all increases for employee premiums’ next year.” (Kent Alltucker, “State Tells Employees Health Insurance Will Rocket,” The Arizona Republic, 7/21/11)

Arizona Forced To “Shift Costs To Employees.” “He noted that federal health reform passed after the Legislature approved funding for next year’s state’s health plan, so with no money left in the state coffers to cover the mandated changes to health insurance plans, the state opted to shift costs to employees.” (Kent Alltucker, “State Tells Employees Health Insurance Will Rocket,” The Arizona Republic, 7/21/11)
