Washington, D.C. – Last month, Jeff Jackson dodged taking a stand on the filibuster, which Politico is calling a “litmus test” for liberal candidates. Shortly thereafter, a Meredith College poll was released in North Carolina showing former State Senator Erica Smith riding a wave of liberal support to a strong show in the Democrat Primary.
Now, just over three weeks later, Jackson is changing his tune to keep pace with Sen. Smith, who has long supported the abolition of the filibuster, and fellow liberal Cheri Beasley. In a series of tweets, Cal Jr. ripped West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin for supporting the filibuster in an effort to forge more compromise in the Senate.
Statement from NRSC Spokesman T.W. Arrighi: “Well that didn’t take long. Once Cal Jr. saw his poll numbers dropping among liberals, he quickly changed his mind on the filibuster and bashed one of the most bipartisan members of the U.S. Senate. Everyone knows State Senator Erica Smith is too liberal for North Carolina, but soon there won’t be any difference between her positions on issues and those of Cal Jr.”
