As Heidi Heitkamp continues to beat around the bush on whether she will support Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court, North Dakotans have made up their minds.
According to a new poll, 60% of North Dakotans support Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Yet despite this overwhelming majority, Heitkamp continues to play coy.
Heitkamp’s refusal to show her hand is a prime example of just how tough of a spot she’s in regarding her reelection. If she supports Kavanaugh, she will upset her radical base, which she desperately needs to have any shot at repeating the 3,000 vote margin she won by in 2012. And if she joins Chuck Schumer and Washington liberals in opposing Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination, she can say sayonara to her Senate career.
“No matter how Heidi Heitkamp votes, her days as a U.S. Senator are numbered,” said NRSC Spokesman Michael McAdams. “While Heitkamp is waiting to hear back from Chuck Schumer on how she can vote, Kevin Cramer has made it crystal clear he supports Judge Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination. North Dakotans deserve a Senator they can trust to support their interests.”
