Claire McCaskill met with Judge Brett Kavanaugh today, but continues to wait for Democratic Party boss Chuck Schumer’s permission before she announces whether she will vote to confirm him. McCaskill appears to be putting Judge Kavanaugh through the same dog and pony show as she did Justice Neil Gorsuch, parading him through her office and then putting out an anodyne statement that tells Missourians nothing.

Last February, McCaskill said she was “glad for the opportunity to sit down with Judge Gorsuch and hear more about his record and his views,” and was “looking forward to seeing his confirmation hearing.” Today, McCaskill said she “welcomed the opportunity to talk with Judge Kavanaugh about his views,” and she would “look forward to hearing more about how he approaches these issues during his upcoming confirmation hearing.”

It remains to be seen whether her fill-in-the-blanks press release means McCaskill will give Judge Kavanaugh the same treatment she gave Justice Gorsuch and vote against his confirmation, or if she will “do what is right,” listen to Missourians and vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh.

“Missourians aren’t interested in Claire McCaskill’s empty words when it comes to confirming President Trump’s Supreme Court picks,” said NRSC Spokesman Bob Salera. “If Claire McCaskill can’t be bothered to buck her party and listed to Missourians even to confirm a judge as eminently qualified as Brett Kavanaugh, she’s unfit to serve in the U.S. Senate.”
