After publicly begging President Trump to keep out of West Virginia last week, Joe Manchin is acknowledging the obvious – President Trump’s popularity presents a huge obstacle to Manchin’s reelection.
Manchin told the Washington Post, “The more he can stay out of West Virginia and direct his energies elsewhere would be helpful.” But President Trump has shown no signs of letting up on Manchin after his votes against a number of administration priorities, including the Trump tax cuts that are putting more money in West Virginians’ pockets. President Trump has already made a trip to the Mountain State this year to campaign against Manchin, and has signaled that the West Virginia Senate seat will be among his top priorities.
If Manchin didn’t want President Trump to campaign against him, perhaps he should have thought a little harder before joining his fellow Democrats in Washington in opposing the Trump agenda every chance he got.
