WASHINGTON – Senate Republicans, making good on a key campaign promise to the American people, passed a sweeping tax cut for middle-class families. Unsurprisingly, Senate Democrats remained united, failing in their final attempt to block the historic legislation.
The Republican tax relief plan, which will cut tax rates across the board, double the child tax credit and substantially increase the standard deduction, is set to head to President Trump’s desk in time to take effect in the new year. While Republicans will have yet another success to tout at home, red state Democrats will be left to explain to their constituents why they fought tooth and nail to block a much-needed tax cut. And as American families see the results of the Republican tax cut in the form of an increase in take-home pay, Democrats will find it more difficult than ever to convince taxpayers to believe their dishonest talking points.
“Senate Republicans delivered on their promise to provide a historic tax cut to American families, but all red state Democrats delivered was another vote in lockstep with Washington liberals,” said NRSC Communications Director Katie Martin. “The tax relief vote provided red state Democrats with a clear choice, and without exception, they chose the side of higher taxes.”
