After spending 18 long years in Washington – and the last six desperately trying to go back, Senator Feingold has broken enough promises to debate himself this evening.

The 29-year-old Russ who first ran for office in 1982 would be appalled by his 2016 self: a creature of Washington and a campaign finance hypocrite who became everything he used to hate.

Just like the words "Senator Feingold" – it’s always "Russ" as Martha Laning taught us, there are many things that the career politician won’t say tonight as he faces citizen legislator Ron Johnson, the people of Wisconsin, and his old self.

Below are some of our favorites:

Senator Feingold will not say "I’ve enjoyed spending time here over the past six years"

After he was fired in 2010, Professor Feingold abandoned Wisconsin to live in sunny California for a lucrative lecturing gig. He traded cheese curds for kale chips – the Packers for the 49ers.

Since leaving Wisconsin, the overpaid professor has demanded at least $450,000 in salaries, honoraria, and speaking fees from colleges and universities across the country.

Senator Feingold will not say "ObamaCare is looking pretty damn good"

After casting the deciding vote for ObamaCare because he thought he knew better than Wisconsinites, Senator Feingold made some bold predictions: patients would be free to keep their current plans, the massive healthcare overhaul would look "pretty damn good," and premiums would lower by 14 to 20 percent.

As health insurers rush to flee the state and Wisconsin families brace for rate increases as high as 30.37% next year, ObamaCare is looking pretty damn bad.

We’ll let Bill Clinton take it from here:

Senator Feingold will not say "I have relied on Wisconsin citizens, not out-of-staters to pay for this campaign"

At a 1992 debate, the godfather of campaign finance reform made a pledge "for the future" to rely on Wisconsinites to pay for his campaigns:

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with occasional out-of-state campaign contributions. But you better darn well make sure that a majority of what you receive is from the people whom you would represent…It would be much easier to raise large contributions outside of the state because people have more money…I’m promising it for the future. I’m saying that’s a pledge I’m going to keep. I’m not going to get in there and go, ‘OK, where are the PACs and where are the out-of-state contributions?’ I’m making a pledge for the future.

The future is here:

Senator Feingold will not say "Progressives United donors are happy with their investment"

Senator Feingold ran his PAC like an ATM machine and used it to get rich. Only 5% of the PAC’s donations went to candidates for political office.

Because of its "shady marketing and highly questionable spending," a campaign finance expert considers Progressives United to be a "legalized slush fund."

Senator Feingold will not say "I will personally call the State Department immediately after this debate to demand the release of my records before Election Day"

Embroiled in his very own State Department email scandal amid allegations that he violated federal law, Senator Feingold apparently no longer thinks that the Freedom of Information Act is "an essential piece of legislation for our democracy."

596 days after the NRSC filed a FOIA request for his records, Senator Feingold and the State Department continue to stonewall – thereby ensuring that voters won’t know the extent to which he plotted an eighth campaign on their dime until after Election Day.

Senator Feingold will not say "Hillary Clinton was extremely careless with very sensitive, highly classified information and her decision to set up a secret email server comprised our national security"

Senator Feingold doesn’t think Hillary Clinton is extremely careless – he thinks Hillary Clinton is "extremely competent," "reliable," and "trustworthy."

Only a career politician embroiled in an email scandal to hide reckless conduct at the State Department would be so eager to vouch for the trustworthiness and competency of a fellow career politician embroiled in an email scandal to hide reckless conduct at the State Department.
