Happy Groundhog Day!
1993 was a big year for repetition; serial Senate candidate Russ Feingold arrived in Washington for the first time and the film ‘Groundhog Day’ was released nationwide.
Decades later, as he embarks on his eighth campaign for political office after running over and over again since 1982, there is no way Senator Feingold’s obsession with Washington is ever going to end.
FEINGOLD FLASHBACK:
-
Feingold, 2/23/12: "I ran for office for 28 years. I started when I was 29, I went ’til 57"
-
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 7/31/15: "If Senator Feingold’s career in the Senate were a person, it could smoke cigarettes, go to war, and actually vote for Senator Feingold."
- The Washington Post, 9/2/15: "…18 years (!) in the U.S. Senate and 10 years in the Wisconsin Senate before that. That’s 64 percent of his adult life spent in office."
Feingold’s addiction to being a career politician forced his campaign to ban supporters from merely mentioning his eighteen long years in the Senate.
FEINGOLD FLASHBACK:
Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Martha Laning on the Feingold Campaign’s Instructions:
…I can share with you the Russ’s campaign – what they’ve told us so far. Never call him "Senator Feingold." We’re to call him "Russ"…They want us to say "Russ" because the last campaign, it was was all about ’16 [sic] years, 16 [sic] years, 16 [sic] years, he’s there too long,’ and so they want to say ‘he’s just one of us. We want to go back to Russ being Russ’…second one is we never want to say ‘go back to the Senate,’ we just want to say ‘electing him to the Senate.’ They want to totally get away from all that. — Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Martha Laning, 7/23/2015
During those eighteen years in Washington, Senator Feingold – who voted in favor of higher taxes at least 285 times and saw the national debt increase nearly $10 trillion, taxed and spent like there was no tomorrow.
