Today marks the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act. Building on that legacy, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) championed the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act, signed into law in 2025, to help millions of Americans, including more than 25,000 Mainers, access more of the benefits they’ve earned.
“Over 25,000 Mainers will receive their hard-earned benefits because of Susan Collins’ dedication to protecting Social Security,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia. “Collins is a champion for her state and will be re-elected in 2026 to continue delivering for hard-working Mainers.”

“In January 2025, Senator Collins’ bipartisan legislation, the Social Security Fairness Act, was signed into law.
“So what does that mean?
“Millions of Americans including thousands in Maine are getting more money from Social Security.
“Teachers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, public servants, millions of Americans will now receive their full, hard-earned Social Security benefits.
“Before Senator Collins spearheaded this bipartisan effort, Americans with public pensions often couldn’t get full Social Security benefits due to two provisions.
“The Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset.
“But the Social Security Fairness Act repeals those laws giving millions of Americans and thousands of Mainers the money they deserve.
