Senate candidate Angie Craig (D-MN) said yesterday that President Trump’s efforts to make D.C. safer for visitors and residents are “totally unjustified” and a “waste of taxpayer dollars.”
But Craig didn’t have any problem being tough on crime when she was the victim of a violent assault by a repeat offender in the elevator of her Washington apartment building in 2023.
After the assault, Craig said she was “assault number 13” on the repeat offender’s record and promised “to do everything in my power to make sure there is not a 14, a 15, a 20.”
In an interview earlier this year, Craig said that the violent assault was a “pivotal moment in my life” and that it took her 6 months “with the help of a trauma specialist” to “evaluate” if she would continue working in Congress. She said the attacker had previously assaulted 12 people and had never served more than 10-30 days in jail.
“It’s hypocritical and shameful for Congresswoman Craig, a DC crime victim who experienced a traumatic assault, to oppose efforts to ensure what happened to her doesn’t happen to anyone else,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia. “All Americans deserve to be safe, regardless of their job title, but Craig claims efforts to make the nation’s capital safe are ‘unjustified.'”
