Washington, D.C. – Today, marked the third time Tina Smith (D-MN) voted against the Laken Riley Act. The bipartisan legislation would require the detainment of illegal migrants accused of theft, burglary and other related crimes. Smith previously voted against the bill in March 2024 and last week.
“Twenty-two-year-old Laken Riley would still be alive today if her killer had been detained after he was accused of shoplifting,” said NRSC Communications Director Joanna Rodriguez. “By repeatedly voting against legislation that would do just that, Tina Smith has told voters that their safety is not her priority. In 2026, it will be time for Minnesotans to retire Tina Smith.”
