WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) voted again to continue Democrats’ government shutdown, betraying Georgia veterans, troops, and working families anxious for their benefits, paychecks, and critical services to be restored. Ossoff has voted to shut down the government four times, including today. Ossoff and Senate Democrats’ radical demands to reopen the government include $1.5 trillion in new spending, funding free healthcare for illegal aliens, and cutting $50 billion in funding for rural hospitals provided by the Working Family Tax Cuts.
“Jon Ossoff is fighting to give illegals free healthcare at the expense of our military families’ pay, critical veterans’ services, and government functions like TSA and air traffic control,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia. “Ossoff’s repeatedly made free healthcare for illegal aliens his priority over Georgia families, troops, and veterans who are all being hurt by his selfish liberal priorities.”
Background:
- Ossoff previously voted to shut down the government, delaying paychecks to military service members, and risking veterans’ healthcare.
- Ossoff also voted to shut down the federal government earlier this year.
Jon Ossoff’s government shutdown is:
- Closing Veterans Affairs’ regional benefits offices in Georgia.
- Closing VA hotlines.
- Forcing active duty troops, TSA and customs agents, and corrections officers to work without pay in Georgia.
- Halting funding for over 230,000 women and children in Georgia who rely on WIC and SNAP.
- Threatening vital healthcare and housing programs for veterans.
- Leaving military families without pay.
- Putting law enforcement lives on the line.
- Leaving 85,000 federal workers in Georgia, including 70,000 active-duty military personnel to work without pay or face furloughs.
- Ending federal loans and disaster assistance to Georgia’s 39,000 farms.
- Delaying critical infrastructure and stormwater management efforts.
- Leaving Federal workers at Robins Air Force Base to be furloughed or working without pay.
- Closing National parks and historic sites.
- Jeopardizing flood insurance for millions of Americans during hurricane season.
- Allowing funding for a critical Medicare patients’ treatment to expire.
- Driving up food prices for America’s most needy families.
Jon Ossoff and Senate Democrats are demanding $1.5 trillion in spending increases to end the shutdown and:
- Revoke $50 billion in rural health care funding
- Restore Biden-era free healthcare for illegal aliens
- Expand taxpayer-funded Medicaid to unemployed, able-bodied individuals without dependents under 14 years old
- Eliminate Republican-passed fraud protections for taxpayer benefits like Medicaid and SNAP
