WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today is the ninth day of Chuck Schumer’s government shutdown and Mark Warner just voted for a seventh time to keep the government shuttered.

“Mark Warner represents a vast amount of federal workers and military service members, yet he just voted with Chuck Schumer for a seventh time to keep the government shuttered,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Samantha Cantrell. “Instead of opening our government, paying our troops, and bringing 189,000 Virginians back to work, Mark Warner and Chuck Schumer are holding our government hostage in a silly attempt to give illegal aliens free healthcare.”

Today, Warner’s leader Chuck Schumer said, “Every day [of the shutdown] gets better for us.” After a coordinatedmonths-long campaign with radical activists, Democrats are holding firm on liberal demands including free healthcare for illegal aliens, $1.5 trillion in new wasteful spending, and cutting $50 billion in funding for rural hospitals provided by the Working Family Tax Cuts.

The devastating impacts of Democrats taking the government hostage are piling up in Virginia:

  • Virginia’s nearly 189,000 federal workers are furloughed or forced to work without pay
  • 107,000 Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program recipients will not receive nutritional support
  • 8,600 Social Security checks are delayed
  • Virginia’s economy will lose $1.7 billion if the government is shutdown for one month
  • 825,000 Virginians will see their SNAP benefits delayed
  • Spending on federal government contracts will fall by $3 billion
  • Ariana Kelly, an Air Force Veteran, is furloughed by the USDA
  • Active-duty military at Naval Station Norfolk are furloughed or forced to work without pay. This will severely impact Hampton Roads, where 40% of the economy is linked to military personnel in the region.
  • Staffing shortages continue to stack up at airports across the country
  • Small businesses nationwide are feeling the pain
  • Farmers and ranchers are unable to access critical services
  • Estimated costs of over $15 billion a week to the American economy

Despite voting to fund the government in the past, Mark Warner is supporting Chuck Schumer’s reckless shutdown:

  • In 2024, Mark Warner said that “Shutdowns aren’t victimless crimes.”
    • Amid the possible December 2024 shutdown, Warner lamented the
service members who would be “working without paychecks during
      Christmas,” “won’t be” fine.
  • In September 2024, Warner called a shutdown “pointless, painful,” and that a
shutdown needed to be averted “at all costs.
  • Warner said that it was a “basic duty” of Congress to avert a shutdown.
