WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) released a new ASMR ad today slamming Janet Mills for repeatedly breaking her promise not to raise taxes on Mainers. Under her leadership, Maine is now one of the most expensive states in the country with housing prices doubled, energy bills higher than they are in New York, insurance rates skyrocketed, and grocery prices still on the rise despite decreasing across the rest of the nation.

“Thanks to Janet Mills’ broken promises, Mainers are paying higher taxes and more to rent their homes and buy groceries. Janet Mills has made Maine one of the most expensive states to live in and Mainers are sick and tired of paying the price for her failed policies,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Samantha Cantrell.

Everything is more expensive in Janet Mills’ Maine:

  • Broken Promise on Taxes: Mills repeatedly pledged not to increase taxes as governor, but she broke her promise after getting re-elected. Mills increased taxes and fees for Mainers on tobacco, hunting and fishing licenses, concealed carry permits, streaming services, and high-value real estate transactions.
  • Housing Crisis: The median home price in Maine has more than doubled, from $200,000 in January 2019 to $426,000 today. Average rent is up 15.8% and Maine ranks in the top 20 states nationwide for the highest rent.
  • Energy Crisis: Heating a home in Maine is more expensive than in New York. Over the last 10 years, the cost of electricity in Maine increased more than double the national average.
  • Insurance and Cars: Under Janet Mills, homeowners insurance has skyrocketed by 40% since 2018, costing Mainers hundreds more annually. Janet Mills’ leadership has jacked up car insurance rates by nearly 82% since 2018, costing Mainers hundreds more annually.
  • Groceries: In March 2025, Maine grocery prices rose while the rest of the country’s fell. In 2024, Maine was the 6th most expensive state for buying groceries. Maine families spend 8.5% of their income on groceries.
