The claws are coming out in the Colorado Democratic Senate primary as progressive challenger Andrew Romanoff went after DSCC-endorsed John Hickenlooper at a Latino forum this weekend.
As reported by Colorado Politics and The Denver Post, Romanoff went off on Hickenlooper and his Washington backers saying, “They recruited into this race a fellow who said he didn’t want the job and wouldn’t be good at it, and they’ve done everything they possibly can to stifle this primary, to annoy the winner, to turn what ought to be a contest into a coronation. Don’t let that happen.”
Romanoff also went after Hickenlooper for skipping more than 10 Democratic primary forums attended by the other candidates. And almost as if on cue, Colorado Politics reported Hickenlooper is bailing on the next forum due to a “scheduling conflict.”
“Progressive activists across Colorado don’t seem to be buying what Hickenlooper is selling, and they have no reason to,” said NRSC spokesperson Joanna Rodriguez. “Hickenlooper has never had to face a serious opponent like Cory Gardner, and – between the upcoming ethics hearing into his private jet trips and mounting pressure to audit his ‘sneaky’ and ‘questionable’ spending from a post-9/11 economic recovery fund – his corruption baggage makes him the most vulnerable candidate in this field.”
