Joe Manchin is trying to walk a tightrope in Washington. On one hand, he has to stay on the good side of Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren, and the rest of his party bosses in the Senate who have vowed to oppose President Donald Trump on all fronts. But Joe also has to contend with the people of West Virginia, who voted for President Trump in a 42-point landslide. So what’s a career politician to do?
In Joe Manchin’s case, the answer is to take both sides of an issue! Last night, Manchin put out a statement supporting an up or down vote for President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch. But this morning in an interview on MSNBC, Joe announced his support for the sixty vote filibuster threshold for confirmation, joining the most liberal faction of his party in demanding a new standard for the Supreme Court.
“Joe Manchin needs to explain to West Virginians why he supports his far-left colleagues’ efforts to filibuster President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee,” said NRSC Spokesman Bob Salera. “West Virginians are sick of D.C. liberals playing partisan games with President Trump’s nominees, and if Joe Manchin won’t stand up for his constituents, they’ll be happy to give him an early retirement.”
