Bayh’s performance has been so dismal that his Washington friends just ponied up millions of dollars to bail him out – despite Bayh’s once-massive war chest. And now the latest embarrassment: Bayh’s one-time ally sidestepped an endorsement while speaking to the a local United Auto Workers chapter:
“However, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, another speaker at Local 933 on the city’s near south side, stopped short of telling the crowd which candidate to support.
“‘I’m not going to tell you who is right or who is wrong,’ Hogsett said. ‘You figure that out. You just make sure whoever that is has your back.’” (Chelsea Schneider, “Hosett Tells Union Crowd To ‘Figure Out’ Whom To Vote For In U.S. Senate Race,” Indianapolis Star, 10/3/16)
If it wasn’t already clear that Bayh turned his back on Indiana when he left the Senate to become a Washington lobbyist, the UAW snub couldn’t be any more personal: it came from a long-time Bayh ally and his former campaign manager.
“Hogsett and Bayh are long-time political associates. Hogsett ran Bayh’s 1988 campaign for governor that ended the GOP’s lengthy hold on the office.” (Chelsea Schneider, “Hosett Tells Union Crowd To ‘Figure Out’ Whom To Vote For In U.S. Senate Race,” Indianapolis Star, 10/3/16)
