Today in Congress, Murphy voted against a bill that would halt the administration’s efforts by prohibiting the transfer or release of any detainee to the United States or any other country. The legislation received bipartisan support, but Murphy chose to support Barack Obama’s reckless national security policies even at the risk of bringing terrorists to American soil.
Murphy’s vote comes just after news broke that additional militants housed at the Guanatnamo facility had predictably returned to fighting after their release:
- In The First Six Months Of 2016, Two More Militants Released From Guantanamo Bay Have Rejoined Militant Groups And Returned To Fighting. “In the first six months of 2016, two more militants released from the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have returned to fighting, the U.S. government said on Wednesday. Washington has confirmed that a total of nine people freed from Guantanamo have rejoined militant groups since President Barack Obama took office in 2009, according to a report issued on Tuesday by the Office of Director of National Intelligence, or ODNI.” (Mark Hosenball, “U.S. Confirms Two More Freed Guantanamo Inmates Rejoined Militant Groups,” Reuters, 9/14/16)
When asked in the past to defend his position on closing Guantanamo and bringing prisoners to the U.S., Murphy’s office doubled down on his decision to put partisan politics above national security:
“‘The Congressman’s votes speak for themselves,’ spokeswoman Erin M. Hale told the Tampa Bay Times.”
They sure do.
