With her poll numbers tanking, Heidi Heitkamp is attempting to reinvent herself as a border security hawk, desperately claiming she’s “always supported increased and enhanced border security along our southwest border with Mexico.”
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Here’s a look at Heitkamp’s weak record on border security and illegal immigration:
- Heitkamp criticized Trump’s plan to build a wall along the southern border, saying, “I just wish we could get beyond it.” (U.S. Senate Committee On Homeland Security and Government Affairs Hearing, 4/5/17)
- Heitkamp voted against a border fence. (Roll Call Vote #151, 6/18/13, Heitkamp Voted Nay)
- Heitkamp voted in support of an amendment that would provide permanent residence for illegal immigrants without funding a border wall. (S.Amdt. 1955 To S.Amdt. 1958 To H.R. 2579, Roll Call Vote #33: Cloture Motion Rejected 52-47, 2/15/18, Heitkamp Voted Yea; CQ Summary, Accessed 2/16/18)
- Heitkamp voted three times against cracking down on sanctuary cities. (Roll Call Vote #119, 7/6/16, Heitkamp Voted Nay; Roll Call Vote #280, 10/20/15, Heitkamp Voted Nay; Roll Call Vote #34, 2/15/18, Heitkamp Voted Nay)
“No matter how hard she tries, Heidi Heitkamp can’t shake her liberal voting record,” said NRSC Spokesman Michael McAdams. “After continuously failing to support President Trump’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration and tough border security measures, North Dakotans aren’t falling for Heitkamp’s desperate campaign stunts.”
