No Senate candidate wished for today’s closing bell more than “Shady Katie” McGinty.
__McGinty came under fire after BuzzFeed revealed that despite Shady Katie bragging on the campaign trail that she was the first in her family to go to college, the claim isn’t true.__ McGinty’s older brother, John, had a master’s degree before she even graduated from high school.
Rather than own up to the lie, McGinty’s campaign tried to defend the claim by stating, “[McGinty’s] brother completed a two-year program then applied the credit’s to receive his bachelors.” Now, not only is Shady Katie caught in a mess of her own making, but she is belittling Pennsylvanians who attend community college.
In case you missed it, here is what’s being said about McGinty’s lie:
Philadelphia Inquirer: "The story chips away at the blue-collar story McGinty has been telling as she runs for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania…This is at least the third time she has been forced to clean up after statements opened the door to attacks on her honesty."
Politics PA: “Turns out one of the primary talking points for Senate Democratic nominee Katie McGinty isn’t true.”
The Morning Call: “Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Katie McGinty is under fire over a report disputing her description that she is the first in her family to go to a four-year college.”
Associated Press: “The Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania has said on the campaign trail that she is the first in her family to go to college. But an online news site reports a brother graduated from college years before her.”
Philadelphia Inquirer, Byko Column: Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Katie McGinty has repeatedly said she was one of 10 kids and the first in her family to go to college.Turns out, it’s not true. When people falsely claim military service or honors, that’s called stolen valor.”
Penn Live: “…the Chester County resident may have embroidered at least one section of her life story: Her claim that she was the first member of her family to go to college.”
