Politico is reporting that New York liberal Chuck Schumer’s dark money group, Majority Forward, is taking to the airwaves in support of his loyal foot soldier in Washington, Democrat Senator Joe Manchin.
Schumer is spending half a million dollars on ads to prop up Manchin, a member of Senate Democrat leadership, who is facing challenges from both the right and left heading into what is expected to be a tough reelection fight. But Manchin has previously spoken out on this type of spending, even going so far as to sponsor a constitutional amendment targeting spending by groups like Majority Forward, saying that “money is destroying the political process.” Will Manchin call on his good friend Chuck Schumer to take down these ads? Or is Joe only against big money in politics when it doesn’t benefit him personally.
“Joe Manchin has been a reliable vote for Senate liberals ever since he came to Washington, so it should come as no surprise that Chuck Schumer is already airing ads on his behalf,” said NRSC Spokesman Bob Salera. “If Manchin refuses to speak out against Schumer’s dark money ads, it will prove that he is a hypocrite who is only concerned with big money in politics when it isn’t spent on his behalf.”
