An investigative report in this morning’s Kansas City Star details Claire McCaskill’s longstanding relationship with shady Richard DeStefane. DeStefane recently settled with the Department of Justice, agreeing to repay $8.3 million to the federal government after an investigation showed that his nursing home company, Reliant Care Group knowingly submitted false claims over a six year period. The report also details startling allegations of neglect of nursing home patients that have led to patients’ injuries and deaths.

McCaskill’s husband previously served as CEO of Reliant, and in addition to continuing business ties, DeStefane has developed a close personal relationship with the Senator, and has also become a key financial backer, donating $61,200 to her campaign and associated committees over the course of her Senate career. DeStafane and McCaskill’s husband jointly own a vacation home on Lake of the Ozarks, where Air Claire is known to kick back and sip watermelon mojitos.

“Claire McCaskill poses as a taxpayer watchdog when she thinks folks are watching, but on the weekends she can be found sipping watermelon mojitos with her Medicare fraudster friend at their vacation house,” said NRSC Spokesman Bob Salera. “Claire McCaskill clearly cares more about maintaining her luxury lifestyle than protecting Missouri seniors.”
