Senate Democrats Pretend to Denounce Dark Money While Accepting Millions
Washington, D.C. – Senate Democrats are at it again, proving to American voters that the only thing they actually stand for is constant hypocrisy. The latest pillar of Senate Democrats’ pro-hypocrisy agenda is the use of so-called “dark money” during elections.
A new analysis from the New York Times found that Democrats relied on the use of dark money – campaign donations from undisclosed donors – to influence campaigns in 2020, all while blasting Republicans’ use of such money “for much of the last decade.” The Times’s analysis revealed how Democrats spent more than $1.5 billion from a network of dark money organizations to sway voters in 2020.

While Democrats boosted their dark money network, Senate Democrats were blasting the use of dark money in elections. Vulnerable Senate Democrats like Mark Kelly, Maggie Hassan, Catherine Cortez Masto, Raphael Warnock, and Michael Bennet – major beneficiaries of Democrats’ dark money – can’t have it both ways. Do these hypocrites stand by their comments to ban dark money in politics?
Michael Bennet: “The Freedom to Vote Act – which would protect elections from dark money […] goes to the Senate floor tomorrow. I’ll be voting for it…”
Catherine Cortez Masto: “And I will tell you, the For the People Act, which I support, which is right now moving through committee, as you talked about at hearings on it, it’s very simple. What does it do? To address all the dark money that’s out there so special interests can’t buy elections or billionaires can’t buy elections, it addresses that.”
Maggie Hassan: “Today, I’m voting yes on the #FreedomToVoteAct […]this bill would help stop billionaires from buying our elections, crack down on dark money…”
Mark Kelly: “We need to get dark money out of politics.”
Raphael Warnock: “…in a system awash in dark money and the dominance of corporatist interests and politicians who do their bidding, the voices of the American people have been increasingly drowned out and crowded out and squeezed out of their own democracy. We must pass ‘For the People’ so that people might have a voice.”
