It’s been three weeks since the White House ‘unleashed a coordinated media and political blitz aimed at weakening’ the GOP position on confirming Barack Obama’s partisan Supreme Court nominee.
And as the Washington Post noted this morning, their efforts have resulted in total failure:
- “The all-out Democratic advocacy blitz during the two-week recess ending Monday has produced no discernible impact in the arena that really matters: the Senate Republican caucus.” (Mike DeBonis, “Senate Republicans Hold Fast Against Garland After Two Weeks Of Democratic Fury,” Washington Post, 4/4/16)
While Democrats’ national efforts have gained zero ground toward confirming Garland, their actions targeting specific Republican Senators have completely backfired. Two public polls released last week in targeted races show Republican Senators improving their position – and blowing a hole in the Democrats’ rationale for confirming Merrick Garland before the American people have a chance to speak.
-
“The Marquette University Law School survey of 1,405 registered voters from March 24-28 showed the gap between Johnson and his Democratic challenger, former Sen. Russ Feingold, narrowing from 12 points to 5 in February…The gap in this latest poll narrows even further when looking only at likely voters who say they will vote in November: 48 percent support Feingold, while 45 percent back Johnson.” (Simone Pathe, “Good News For Ron Johnson’s Re-Election Bid,” Roll Call, 3/30/16)
- “A new public opinion poll in Missouri offers good news for both major political parties — and cautionary notes for each. The poll was prepared by DFM Research of Minnesota on behalf of the United Transportation Union…Sen. Roy Blunt, a Republican, leads Secretary of State Jason Kander, a Democrat, 49 percent to 35 percent.” (Dave Helling, “New Poll: Clinton Beats Trump In Missouri; Blunt Beats Kander,” Kansas City Star, 4/1/16)
As Democrats continue to take a victory lap over their efforts to confirm Obama’s liberal court pick, just remember: for all of the money spent, and all of the tales spun, they have accomplished exactly nothing.
