Washington, D.C. – North Carolina appears to be drifting off the map for Democrats. Chuck Schumer’s Super PAC reserved ad time in swing states for the Fall and one state was conspicuously absent: the Tar Heel State.
It’s not hard to see why. Just look at some of the numbers from a new High Point University poll of North Carolina residents:
- President Biden’s approval rating sits at 35%, well below the national average. Over half of North Carolinians (53%) disapprove.
- 63% think that the country is headed in the wrong direction.
- On President Biden’s handling of inflation: 19% approve, 65% disapprove.
- On President Biden’s handling of gas prices: 18% approve, 70% disapprove.
- Republicans are up 6 points on a generic ballot.
Yikes! Meanwhile, Democrat nominee-in-waiting Cheri Beasley is largely invisible, taking the few policy points she has made in her lackluster campaign directly from the White House. Given reports of the lack of early ad buys from Democrat Super PACs in North Carolina, it’s clear Beasley doesn’t offer a path to victory when faced with the above numbers.
Statement from NRSC Spokesman T.W. Arrighi: “North Carolinians aren’t fans of Joe Biden and the way he is handling the rising cost of living. That is a fact that isn’t set to change any time soon. Cheri Beasley, however, seems oblivious to this fact – nearly as oblivious as North Carolinians are to the fact that she is running for U.S. Senate. I don’t blame Washington Democrats for already declaring the race a lost cause, especially since the Senate map has expanded.”
