As if Patrick Murphy’s campaign finance hypocrisy wasn’t embarrassing enough, it now appears that the Super PAC largely bankrolled by Murphy’s father has been caught accepting an illegal $50,000 contribution.
- “Floridians for a Strong Middle Class, a super PAC supporting Democratic Rep. Patrick Murphy’s U.S. Senate bid, may have accepted $50,000 in illegal, possibly criminal contributions from a limited liability company owned by Nicholas Mastroianni II, a Palm Beach investment broker and developer with a checkered business past.” (Francisco Alvarado, “Super PAC Backing Rep. Murphy’s US Senate Bid May Have Accepted Illegal Contributions,” Florida Bulldog, 3/11/16)
This must be why Murphy once said, “By fighting against Citizens United, we are fighting for our democracy itself.”
Surely this principled warrior will disavow the outside money propping up his candidacy?
“‘I’d love to get the money out of politics,’ he told the Times. "I’m certainly not going to single-handedly disarm though.’” (Adam Smith, “Senate Candidate Patrick Murphy Wants Money Out Of Politics, But Not His Father’s,” Tampa Bay Times, 3/4/16)
Maybe next time.
