Newspapers across the country have begun to weigh in on Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats’ announcement that they would attempt an unprecedented filibuster against Judge Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. And across the country, the message is the same: Judge Gorsuch is qualified and Democrat obstruction is “ill-advised” and “foolish.”

Wall Street Journal: Schumer’s Gorsuch Gambit – “So much for Senate deliberation. Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch had barely finished his testimony when Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Thursday that he would vote against the judge and demand 60 votes for confirmation. Republicans will have to be prepared to call this Democratic bluff.”

__Billings Gazette: Gazette opinion: Democrats refuse to rise above petty partisan politics__ – “Gorsuch deserves an up-or-down vote regardless. If Democrats are so concerned about the ideology or legal philosophy of Gorsuch, then they should vote their conscience and make their case. A filibuster isn’t a vote. A filibuster is just another symptom of a diseased and dysfunctional political process that continues to value a tit-for-tat mindset while the voters see little get done. This kind of one-upsmanship will only serve to widen the divisions in our politics.”

Lowell Sun: Editorial: There’s no reason to deny Neil Gorsuch – “Partisan politics aside, there’s no question Neil Gorsuch possesses the qualifications and temperament to be the high court’s ninth justice… Maybe a few Democrats will show some backbone, break with party ranks, and give Gorsuch the vote he deserves.”

__Boston Herald: Editorial: Shame on Senate Dems__ – “So the top Democrat in the U.S. Senate, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer made it official yesterday — he will lead a filibuster of Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court. What a pity. And how utterly shameful that Massachusetts’ two senators were among the very first to jump on board this ill-advised band wagon.”

__Denver Post: Editorial: Michael Bennet should buck Democrats and speak up for Neil Gorsuch__ – “Colorado’s senior senator, Democrat Michael Bennet, is blowing an important opportunity to stand up for our state and nation in sitting on the sidelines while his party foolishly seeks to block the path of Denver native Neil Gorsuch to the highest court in the land.”

__Omaha World-Herald: Editorial: Senate should vote to confirm Gorsuch__ – “We’ve long stated here that presidents deserve considerable deference for their Supreme Court nominees, regardless of ideology, as long as the individuals display the needed competence. Gorsuch clearly passes that test. The American Bar Association has given him its highest rating.”
