Welcome to this Friday’s edition of Feingold Flashbacks. With Secretary Kerry before Congressional committees selling the Iran nuclear agreement, we wanted to highlight Russ Feingold’s weak record on Iran.

In an interview with BBC yesterday, President Obama admitted that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards will “probably” have more resources as a result of the nuclear agreement. And yesterday, Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff told CNN “Iran has proved very cost-effective in their support of Hezbollah. They have been able to stretch a few dollars a long way. Now they will have a lot more dollars.”

In 2007, Russ Feingold was one of only 22 Senators to vote against an amendment supporting the designation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a foreign terrorist organization.

While Feingold has been silent since the nuclear agreement with Iran was announced, his record shows a disturbing lack of understanding of the threat Iran poses to American national security.

BACKGROUND:

In 2007, Feingold Voted Against A Sense Of The Senate That Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Be Designated As A Foreign Terrorist Organization. “Kyl, R-Ariz., amendment no. 3017 to the Levin, D-Mich., substitute amendment no. 2011. The Kyl amendment would express the sense of the Senate that it is in the critical national interest of the United States to prevent the government of Iran from turning Shiite militia extremists in Iraq into a Hezbollah-like force that could serve its interests inside Iraq. It also would express that the United States should designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a foreign terrorist organization. The substitute would authorize $648.3 billion for defense programs in fiscal 2008, including $127.5 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also would authorize $143.5 billion for operations and maintenance; $109.9 billion for procurement; $122.9 billion for military personnel and $74.7 billion for research development, testing and evaluation.” (H.R. 1585, CQ Vote #349: Adopted 76-22: R 46-2; D 29-19; I 1-1, 9/26/07, Feingold Voted Nay)

o The Designation As A Foreign Terrorist Organization Would Open The Revolutionary Guards Corps And Affiliated Companies To Economic Sanctions. “The US Senate has called for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to be officially designated a ‘foreign terrorist organization,’ a day after the House of Representatives passed a similar measure. The Senate on Wednesday voted 76-22 for the non-binding amendment sponsored by Republican Jon Kyl and independent Joseph Lieberman to place the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, or Pasdaran, on the US terrorist blacklist. Such a designation if adopted by the US government would open the corps and affiliated companies to economic sanctions.” (Agence France Presse, 9/27/07)

· Feingold Vice Chairman Of The Intelligence Committee Dianne Feinstein, Former Secretary Of State Hillary Clinton, And Former Wisconsin Senator Herb Kohl. (H.R. 1585, CQ Vote #349: Adopted 76-22: R 46-2; D 29-19; I 1-1, 9/26/07, Clinton, Feinstein, Kohl Voted Yea)
